My special areas of interest are exploring identity issues with adoptees and supporting those struggling with life transitions, including
grief
and
loss
.
I enjoy working with individuals of different ages, ethnicity, in need of individual, couples or family sessions. I believe that life is a journey, which at times, can be very challenging. Sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroads, trying to decide our direction. Staying on familiar paths can be easier yet repetitive and stagnant. Growth means change and following new paths, though unfamiliar and with unseen risks. Therapy can help one believe in themselves and try new paths, with the therapist lighting the way.

We may work on developing stronger interpersonal relationships, reframing negative thought patterns, identifying self-defeating behaviors, or understanding ways to cope with a significant life change or
loss
.
Life challenges us time and again, but after hardships, we find our strength. I am the empathetic and compassionate person I am today as a result of challenging life experiences that led me on this path and gave me an unfailing passion for helping others feel better and achieve their personal best. My goal is to provide you with genuine connection, attention, and care, using an individually tailored approach that addresses both the mind and body and best supports your own unique needs. Using primarily psychodynamic interventions, we will dig deep to identify whatever the core conflict may be that is causing emotional distress.

My background includes working with women's issues, anxiety, depression, addiction, parenting issues,
grief
, and life and stress management.
I have been a therapist since 2003 and if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that everyone needs someone to talk to. We all have feelings, whether we feel happy, excited, anxious, worried, nervous, sad or depressed—we need to get those feelings off our chest. Another thing I’ve learned over the years is keeping those feelings bottled up inside can and will make us sick. Why is something as simple as getting things off our chest so difficult to do? I believe it’s because of our pride and fear of judgment about our feelings. As a therapist, I truly strive to allow people to speak freely in a safe environment.

Are you struggling to control your anxiety? Always sure something bad is going to happen? Are you constantly worried about things such as health, money, family, work, or school? Life can be overwhelming and painful, but you don’t have to “tough it out” alone. Life is too short to let trauma control us or be anxious all the time. I want you to be free of emotional pain and to find meaning/purpose in all areas of your life. I can help you find healing and understanding in desperate situations while enjoying the process as much as possible.

I have training and experience working with trauma, anxiety, depression, couples (including non-monogamy), families, children and teens, substance use, mood disorders, co-occurring disorders,
grief
, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (including infertility and miscarriage) and life transitions.
My goal as a therapist is to help others learn about and understand their issues in a safe and open environment. Seeking out help can be scary and stressful, and my hope is to make people feel comfortable addressing their concerns without feeling judged. Therapy is a unique and personal experience, and I use various interventions to match each person’s needs and goals. I use a mixture of therapeutic techniques to help individuals identify the issues they would like to focus on and to develop goals. I believe goal setting and providing tools to cope are imperative to success in therapy.

The foundation of counseling should be a healthy therapeutic relationship between counselor and client. I help individuals learn about themselves and get more of an understanding of why they feel what they feel. Working with an individual to establish what and why when solving a particular problem should be a collaborative effort. I empower the individual by helping them realize that they do have the tools to be able to handle what life throws at them. We may not be able to control the world around us but we are in control of our own decisions and how we react.

Choosing a therapist is VERY important. It should be someone with whom you feel trust, comfort and in good care. If you don't, it's not a "good fit" because therapy is about the relationship you have with your therapist. I always say, "I don't do nails, hair or surgery so our progress is based on how you feel with me and the trust we establish". I am hard-working, dedicated, compassionate, perceptive and determined to do my best. I am passionate about this work. Anxiety, depression/mood, panic, relationship issues, ADHD, addiction, self-harm, name some areas of expertise.

My approach to therapy is based on the idea that each person has gifts, passions and skills that can be tapped into to guide them toward an authentic, value-based life. My goal is to partner with you to provide a safe, non-judgmental space that allows for reflection, healing from past emotional wounds, and growth by establishing new coping skills to replace old patterns of thinking and behaving. I have extensive training in trauma and EMDR through the International Association (EMDRIA) as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
