Supporting Adults with Trauma, Attachment Wounds, or Neurodivergence ... You’re a person who is reflective and actively engaged in self-improvement, perhaps even having done therapy before. From the outside, you seem ‘fine’. Nevertheless, you find it hard to quiet your mind, feel settled in relationships, and to stop overanalyzing your decision. Now, you’re ready to understand yourself more fully and create a life that goes beyond having the 'right answers’.

3rdchair believed a supportive community for young adults needed to exist. So, we looked around, and we did not see a unique place crafted to meet the needs our young adults are facing in today’s complex environment. Through that research and identifying their needs, we decided that this would be the place to champion young adults here in Michigan. We are a collective bunch of 25 counselors who specialize in counseling high school, college students, and 20-somethings. 3rdchair is a 501c3 nonprofit that ensures all young adults have access to counseling to get the help they need, regardless of their financial capacity.

Vulnerability: while rewarding, can be daunting. It isn’t easy to let someone into your internal landscape and I value the possibility of learning yours. My name is Sam and I work with clients to become intimately comfortable with the buried and beautifully impactful aspects of themselves. Often, the relationship to yourself contributes to how your days unfold in the world around you. When was the last time you heard or nurtured the parts of yourself that long for you? In doing so, a gateway opens up to a sense of self-worth that will allow you to experience yourself and your environment with a new lens.

Hello! Within my first few years of college, I finally figured out what I wanted to do as a career. I realized I wanted to help people through their own life obstacles, trauma, life stages, and more! I want to help others with their mental health and make their world a better place. As I continue to learn and grow throughout my professional career, I want to work with a variety of populations and ages. To me, counseling is a journey of being honest with who you are and who you want to present to the world. I believe that it is an honor to be able to embark on this journey with you and to share unique experiences of ourselves.

The ideal client would be an individual who is engaged in the process of change and healing. One who is open and willing to share. To take a quote from, The Purpose Driven Life, 'There is no growth without change, no change without fear or loss, and no loss without pain.' If it is time to let go of the old and experience the new, allow me to support the journey.

I enjoy working with with teens and young adults who are navigating anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, relationship strain, or major life transitions. Many feel overwhelmed, stuck in survival mode, or disconnected from themselves and others. They may be processing grief, rebuilding self-esteem, navigating life decisions, or healing from past relationships. They want safety, clarity, and steady support as they regain confidence, strengthen boundaries, and create relationships and a life that feel secure, empowering, and aligned with who they truly are now.

Love and Healing Therapy provides a safe place for clients to learn skills for dealing with today and the future. Sometimes it is not easy to be in present day if we are carrying around the past. Many have been taught to put on the mask and all will be well. Sometimes we need help to let the mask fall and see the real person.

My therapeutic practice is very distinct in its approach, combining deep intentionality with a commitment to human empowerment through education. I believe that knowledge is power, and it’s my mission to help clients understand the “why” behind their behaviors to unlock their potential for rapid transformation. I use evidence-based, person-centered cognitive and behavioral techniques to help clients rewire their thoughts and behaviors. By exploring the science behind their patterns, clients gain the tools to take control of their minds and make lasting change.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
