Have you talked about your experiences in therapy but are still experiencing trauma symptoms? Are you frustrated because you know why you are struggling and still can't make it go away? Thinking only gets us so far in the healing process of trauma. As humans, we also need to work with the emotional and survival parts of the brain to heal and process traumatic experiences. Experiential and art therapies can help us decrease anxiety, panic, and depression and help us regain ownership of our emotions. Let's bring some joy back into our lives.

Throughout life, it is possible to find ourselves on a journey we believe is impossible to complete. Through therapy, we learn that no journey is impossible; however sometimes we must detour...delay...revisit...or speed up! This analogy speaks to the true essence of therapy, helping others to navigate obstacles that present themselves along their journey. I will partner with you to find your path to a healthy existence despite any detours you encounter.

I am most passionate about supporting women and families through the various seasons of life, specifically pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to motherhood, as well as parenting young children and adjusting to other relationship, career, or general life changes. I desire to support women and families to unpack what is holding them back from feeling happy, successful, and confident. By using a relationship-based approach, we can address issues such as anxiety, depression, postpartum adjustments, grief and loss, parent-child dynamics, and children’s behavioral concerns.

As a therapist, I believe individuals are the experts of their own life, and with this understanding my goal is to listen, understand, empower, and help my clients find solutions to the difficulties they may be facing. My approach to therapy is holistic and I recognize the importance of understanding the relationship between our thoughts, actions, and emotions, and offer tools to intervene. In the session, I believe in the inherent strengths that every person holds as a result of their journey, both through the ups and the downs of life.

Others consider you a successful woman, but you feel like you’re a mess. The idea of being vulnerable is paralyzing and voicing your needs is a terrifying concept. You’re consumed with guilt and shame. You fear hurting people’s feelings and tend to take care of those around you, even though you might not want to. Your relationships are struggling. You crave a deeper connection but don’t know how to get there. You’re overwhelmed, exhausted, and resentful trying to keep everyone happy. You’re trying your hardest to put on a good face for others, but you feel like things are falling apart. You're ready for real, lasting change.

*Kimatha is currently full & unable to accept new clients at this time * “Charity begins at home”, my mother would always say. “Outside, the world is hard enough, but at home you should have peace.” This has been my mantra for many years and continues to be a standard I commit to uphold. Generosity should begin at home, but home can look different for many of us. Home can be a person, place, or even a feeling. It can be with someone or somewhere you belong - where you are loved, respected, and cared for. Sometimes, though, our life experiences can make us feel without a home. Our home, perhaps, isn’t or wasn’t a safe place.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
