I see a primary goal of psychotherapy as providing the individual with a sense of empowerment: the belief that you are able to control your own thoughts and actions and through that interact more effectively in social, personal, and occupational arenas. Therapy begins with establing a supportive therapeutic
relationship
, in which one feels accepted and validated. The specific methods I use vary depending on the nature of the problem and the needs of the client.

Many of my clients initially seek treatment because they know something isn't quite right....they know they aren't functioning as the best version of themselves, or living their best possible lives. Often, they have struggled with their mood off and on for years or even decades. Most are feeling a lot of stress, low self-worth, the belief that somehow there is something "wrong" with them, or lack the confidence to do the things they want to do. Some have the insight that they need to resolve past events or circumstances in order to live a truly fulfilling life. They suffer even if they might have that picture perfect life.

I see the counseling
relationship
as a collaborative effort.
I hope to be a help and support to those experiencing anxiety, depression, the effects of trauma, and stress. I also specialize in serving 1st responders (including those in policing, corrections and healthcare) and those who have experienced vicarious trauma and work stress. I believe we can resolve or lessen the effects of mental health and life stressors through the therapeutic process. My philosophy is that the act of sharing life experiences with another is a healing process and can often create profound changes in mood management and the resolution of anxiety.

You’re looking for an emotional connection to your
partner
, heal after pain you endured together, to feel loved.
(As a couple or individual) - Experiencing a traumatic event, anxiety/ past pain can send you into a panic, tearful, angry, shut down. Feeling disconnected from yourself or from your
partner
. Stress feels so intense that sometimes it moves you to withdrawal. Or it rises into agitation: why doesn't my
partner
see my pain? Why did this/does this conflict/"bad thing" happen? What if it happens again? Feeling distrustful that anyone will be there for you either because you have been let down by someone before (maybe your
partner
) or have experienced something painful/traumatic & fear it will happen again. Feeling lonely and ignored.

Finding the right therapist is essential, and beginning by developing a trusting and respectful
relationship
is where the journey begins between therapist and client. I believe that people can experience true healing and reconcile their past and their present. You can use what you learn to shed old patterns that no longer serve you. Communication is key, and in learning how to do this within yourself, you can create change to achieve a better quality of life.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
