As a
teen
I struggled with feelings of anxiety and depression.
Are you at a place in your life where you are struggling to find your way? Does it feel like you’re constantly worrying about the future, weighing out your options, and trying to figure out what's next? Many of my clients come in seeking clarity on why they feel the way they feel, what's getting in the way of their goals, and how they have established patterns in behavior that no longer serve them. I work closely with my clients to explore the root of their problems, and identify obstacles serving as beliefs. In our work, we will identify your strengths, develop new ways of thinking, and cultivate a more fulfilling sense of self.

I have developed, a structure skills intervention lesson plan,to work with children and
adolescent
- who are struggling to make social connections.
In a career that spans three decades in social work, I have developed a proven and unique approach to individual, family and marital counseling. My passion has always been working with children and families. After serving for more than 25 years in the Northville Public School system, I have become well versed in a variety of individualized treatment techniques The common thread that runs through all of those different scenarios is compassion and a willingness to listen. A therapist's job isn't about the therapist imposing his views. It's about the client. It's about you.

Welcome. I have been at this almost forty years. Enjoy it now more then ever. Over the years I believe I have developed some skill working with
Adolescent
and families, and those experiencing problems with Substance Use and Abuse. I Started working with Adolescents and Families in residential treatment, schools and hospitals. Two years in a Methadone Clinic provided an early glimpse into Opiate addiction. A mid-life descent into Alcoholism provided a very personal understanding of addiction and recovery. I know that recovery can occur both within and outside the AA model.

Nothing feels more powerless than watching your

shut down from trauma, social isolation and bullying, and use self-harm or aggression as a relief from pain. Young people don't always know how to express what they're feeling with words. Often their behaviors tell the story of how they feel. When those behaviors are stemming from inner conflict and pain, it's not just acting out - it's cry for help. We need to identify the root cause... and help them get on the right track so they start using their feelings as a guide, and navigating their emotional system toward self-love, self-worth and true confidence from the inside out.

My clients believe they have an external challenge (ie, want a divorce, needs a new job, needs to move, has too much going on etc). After finishing our first session, they very often self discover that it's actually something internal for them. It's something internal, and most likely leftover from a previous experience and it continues to push back. Rarely do we realize the things we've normalized and how they are impact our daily lives. Oftentimes we work so hard at shifting things on a conscious level, never realizing that the unconscious programming is what keeps us paralyzed. Together we can release things and move forward.

Chronic illness, grief, addiction, disordered eating, trauma, can leave us with a sense of hopelessness, frustration and a hyper-vigilant/hypo-vigilant nervous system. Utilizing evidence based interventions, we can rewire the nervous system, unlock your value system, shift and exchange coping skills to find neurtrality, while exploring barriers and patterns of emotions, behaviors or thoughts, while creating space to increase and motivation and willingness towards your goals. Resiliency, perseverance, and hope are essential to healing, and I look forward to helping establish, build or repair your unique foundation of healing.

The more you understand yourself and your patterns of behavior the better you can make positive change. Do you have marital issues that you are struggling with and need an honest objective opinion? Are you struggling with depression or anxiety and can’t seem to get out of the cycle? Many times it is another set of ears that is needed to help bring objectivity and clarity to an issue of life's crossroads. I also enjoy helping people understand why they keep repeating negative patterns and behaviors. Therapy can be very positive and inspire you to make changes.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
