Psychotherapy can help. At its heart, psychotherapy is about listening. And you, feeling truly heard in a new, and refreshing way. As a therapist I strive to listen with compassion and interest to help my clients hear their own voice. Reflected, this offers possibilities for greater self understanding, change, and new direction. The therapeutic relationship serves as a catalyst for the positive changes that you as a client seek.

I meet each person where they are at and work collaboratively to address individual needs/goals. I will provide you with a safe, comfortable and judgment-free space to explore your inner thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams. I recognize that you are the expert of you. My goal is to guide you towards further self-discovery by helping identify your triggers, develop positive coping skills, overcome life’s challenges and work towards living your fullest life.

My clinical scope has included working with children to adults in addressing concerns such as trauma, anxiety, depression, women's issues , and self-esteem.
I walk with clients through life's challenges. I actively listen and provide support in a safe, nonjudgmental environment where clients are empowered to recognize their strengths as they explore their concerns, heal, and grow. In utilizing a trauma-informed, strength-based, and client-centered approach, I work with clients to identify and develop treatment goals that are tailored to their unique needs. Upon a client's request, I can also incorporate faith (with emphasis in Christianity) into counseling as faith plays an integral role in an individual's identity and worldview.

By addressing women's issues through feminist theory and humanistic psychology, my practice focuses on the woman's experience. By nurturing connections that can encourage recovery from chronic PTSD, trauma, sexual assault, general burnout, caretaking burnout, generalized anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and hopelessness, I can help you find your Inner badass. The pressure for women to perform at the highest levels in all aspects of their lives is at a breaking point. The emotional costs are very high! It has an impact on all relationships. I can help you say No to the things you feel obligated to do.

I strive to create an affirming space where you can engage with vulnerability and self-reflection. No one knows your experience better than you. That is why I emphasize collaboration and self-determination in our therapeutic relationship and encourage you to explore your own values, strengths and wants in therapy. My practice is grounded in anti-oppressive frameworks that aim to recognize and address the impact that systemic violence and social injustices can have on your wellbeing. I value an honest therapeutic relationship and to be part of the system that supports your wellness and joy.

I am excited to partner with you in this phase of your journey. My goal as your therapist is to walk alongside you as you discover your own voice, passions and healing. I believe you have everything you need within you to cope. Through an eclectic approach of attachment theory, CBT, transpersonal theory, internal family systems and mindfulness practices, we will explore the experiences that led you to therapy. There are many reasons to seek therapy- unfulfilling relationships, trouble with self-image, difficult family dynamics, life transitions, traumatic experiences or loss, and all can be explored in a supported setting.

As a therapist, I approach all of my work from a social justice framework. I enjoy working with clients from diverse backgrounds, including those struggling with chronic disabilities. I work with clients to set realistic, attainable goals for treatment and I aim for transparency in everything that I do. I particularly enjoy supporting women, members of the LGBTQ community and clients from other marginalized groups, as I understand the struggles well. I am culturally Deaf and fluent in ASL, and as such, I serve many Deaf clients. However, spoken English is my native language, so many of my clients are also hearing.

Greetings! My name is Sydney Klevering. I graduated with my master’s degree in social work from Michigan State University in spring of 2021. Throughout my practice, I have worked with individuals of ages 8 through 65. I have experience working with individuals through their traumas, shame, anxiety, anger, depression, identity issues, relationship troubles, grief, and heartache. I believe therapy looks different for each individual depending on what they are needing from the therapeutic space. Sometimes it’s using humor to bring connection, other times it’s processing tough challenges without judgement.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
