Trauma
comes in many forms - a divorce, a troubled childhood, mental illness, or a toxic workplace.
Our lives are a system made up of family, friends, biases, and life experiences. If one part of the system has fractured, the entire system functions incorrectly. As someone who didn't believe therapy could help me, I struggled with a spiral of bad decisions before seeking therapy as a last-ditch effort to "fix" myself. I'm thankful that I found therapy when I did - it saved my life, prevented years of heartache, and gave me purpose and direction. I want to work with you to create the best possible life for yourself. You deserve a life filled with healthy people, boundaries, and genuine joy. Let's find it together.

I have particular experience working with self-esteem issues,
trauma
, and anxiety/depression.
The foundation of effective and beneficial therapy is a good relationship. The relationship between therapist and client can provide an opportunity for working through difficult emotions and experiences, both past and present. I strive to develop a nonjudgmental partnership with each person I see in therapy, keeping in mind that every person and situation is unique. This allows us, together, to explore and understand the issues that bring you to therapy and how to begin to resolve them.

In my practice, I often treat couples where one or both partners suffer from
trauma
, disentangling the ways in which people trigger each other, teaching tools to de-escalate.
I have 27 years experience helping adults to thrive, both as individuals and in relationship. My training includes Emotionally Focused Therapy (advanced level) and the Gottman Method, both of which are evidence-based, empirically-validated approaches. While at the Univ. of Mich. School of Social Work, I completed specialized training (including a post-grad. prog.) in the U/M Psychiatry Dept. Marital Clinic at the former Riverview Clinic. I also have 27 yrs. of training/experience treating complex
trauma

I use an eclectic approach rooted in relationship-based and
trauma
-informed care.
Most of us grapple with who we are and what we want from our lives. Struggles with identity can cause or exacerbate problems with mood and anxiety, relationship and parenting issues, concerns related to work or school, and can bring up reminders of painful parts of our history. It is my goal to support people to learn about and feel confident in themselves! In particular, I am passionate about supporting LGBTQIA+ folx and those struggling with parenting/ transition to parenthood. It is vital to have a space to explore and process who we are and what we want from life, and that's what I hope to provide for everyone I see.

Areas of emphasis: family of origin issues; attachment or intergenerational
trauma
; narcissistic abuse; race and/or gender related stress/
trauma
; perfectionism, high levels of self-criticism and shame.
Life is hard! Pause for a moment and give yourself credit for taking this brave, difficult step. You're respecting your struggles AND looking for constructive ways to address them. I use a collaborative and exploratory (rather than expert) model to help you develop/access resources to navigate life's difficulties. I use approaches supported by research while recognizing the limits of evidence-based therapies which often need to be adapted, abandoned, or incorporated with other practices to meet a person's realities, needs, and strengths. I strive to create a safe supportive relationship and deeply value feedback and dialogue.

trauma

I utilize
trauma
-informed treatments such as EMDR and Internal Family Systems theory.
The foundation of any therapy is the relationship between the counselor and the client. Research has shown that the therapeutic relationship may be more important to treatment success than the specific therapeutic technique. For my part, I attempt to be the best therapist that I possibly can in regard to both the therapeutic relationship and technique. My goal is to walk with you in the therapy process. The path may be dark, but you will not be alone. I work with both couples and individuals in addressing symptoms caused by
trauma
.

You're ready to start feeling better and are interested in a holistic approach embracing: forgiveness, self esteem,
trauma
, anxiety, depression, co-dependency, loneliness and learning to tap into your inner resilience.
No matter how hard you try to move forward, you feel like your taking one step back. You’re a high performer with perfectionism tendencies and always put on a smile, which helps you forget your pain. You feel you will never be fully happy and never be able to fully enjoy life how others do, because of your many losses, attributing to your decreased self esteem. You may keep friends and family at a distance, to protect yourself from yet another inevitable loss. You may have stopped exercising and taking care of yourself the way you used to, since it takes too much work and you're just surviving at the end of another long day.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
