Have you ever been told you’re "too sensitive" or "too much"? What about "not enough"? Have you felt pressured to meet other’s expectations and disregard your own needs, feelings and wants? If this feels true, you are not alone. I have experience working with individuals through their traumas, shame, anxiety, anger, depression, identity issues, life transition, relationship troubles, grief, and heartache. I believe therapy looks different for each individual depending on what they are needing from the therapeutic space. Sometimes it’s using humor to bring connection, other times it’s processing tough challenges without judgement.

As your therapist, I will strive to meet you where you are at; seeing your strengths, life experiences and qualities that make you, you. Trauma, which by definition is unique to each individual, has a large impact on not only how you view yourself, but on how you view the world. I believe in coming alongside you, as you begin your therapeutic and healing journey, to discover and "unlock" parts of you. I've spent the past twelve years working with survivors of traumas, including childhood emotional neglect and varying types of violence. I believe there is nothing braver than entering this journey and am honored to be alongside you.

It is written, "Hope is an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." A popular image of an anchor symbolizes safety and stability. Many people - maybe even you - face terrible storms in their lives: addiction, abuse, fear, loss of relationships, joblessness, loneliness and more. In response to life's storms, people turn to compulsive sexual behavior, anger, substance abuse and food to soothe themselves. These "medications" not only do not work, but create chaos in our lives. Other ways of dealing with turmoil include lying, isolation and feelings of shame, guilt and worthlessness. I offer a refuge to chart a new course.

Here come those feelings of frustration and anger, coupled with no one understanding your challenges, or saying the wrong thing to you without thinking of the impact. Dealing with chronic illness and pain is a consistent struggle. Sometimes getting through a day to just support a decent lifestyle is excruciating. The isolation is troubling because a social life feels so out of reach Top that off with a relationship and a healthy sex life seems impossible at the moment. Everyday feels like a marathon of how much can be done while feeling a consistent exhaustion that never goes away. Waking up feeling refreshed seems like a fantasy.

Have you talked about your experiences in therapy but are still experiencing trauma symptoms? Thinking only gets us so far in the healing process of trauma. As humans, we also need to work with the emotional and survival parts of the brain to heal and process traumatic experiences. Experiential and art therapies can help us decrease anxiety, panic, and depression and help us regain ownership of our emotions. My passion is helping bring joy back into the lives of survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

If you experience a pattern of disappointment and hurt in your relationships, you might begin to wonder what you're doing wrong. You may feel anxious around others and read into what they do and say to determine how they feel about you. Conflict might bring up feelings of unworthiness and self-blame. Others seem to have such ease with relationships, and you don’t understand why it feels like such a struggle to find and keep connections that feel secure. As hard as you've tried, you've not been able to interrupt this pattern and you worry you’ll feel this way forever.

The foundation of effective and beneficial therapy is a good relationship. The relationship between therapist and client can provide an opportunity for working through difficult emotions and experiences, both past and present. I strive to develop a nonjudgmental partnership with each person I see in therapy, keeping in mind that every person and situation is unique. This allows us, together, to explore and understand the issues that bring you to therapy and how to begin to resolve them.

Trained at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a clinical psychologist, I believe that I have developed a compassionate, effective approach to helping people. My work is primarily informed by a psychodynamic framework and also contains elements of cognitive behavioral techniques and family systems thinking. I am convinced that the heart of psychotherapy involves a conversation and meaningful engagement between the patient and the therapist.

Life can be hard. Young people face a number of challenges-- family stresses, anxiety about growing older and separating from parents, peer pressure, the lure of substances. As adults, we also face painful stressors-- divorce, for example, losses, aging. We can become stuck, overwhelmed, and confused. In my work with adolescents and adults, I offer an engaged, intensive approach that will allow us to understand how longstanding dysfunctional patterns and beliefs affect your daily life. Specialized training and decades of experience have taught me that the better we understand ourselves, the better we can handle challenges and implement adaptive solutions.
