I believe that most behavioral/ emotional problems have a common origin which is the failure to express true emotions and feelings. Individuals learn early on that which is acceptable and that which is not. As we push away feelings, and deny parts of who we are, these feelings don't simply disappear; instead, they remain hidden, and continue to influence behavior in unpredictable and negative ways. Because of this commonality in most problems, I welcome people who have problems with anxiety, depression,eating disorders, relationship problems, sexual concerns,and addictive behaviors.

When people think about addiction they often jump to abstinence. Of course, there are many situations when abstinence is necessary, but there are also many times when there is room for improvements and management without the need for complete avoidance. This is in part due to how many different substances or activities there are that can lead to what is essentially an addiction. Sugar, caffeine, sports, alcohol, food, video games, dating, social media, gambling, pornography, shopping, these all interact with our brains in ways that can lead to seriously interfering with our ability to enjoy what we most value.

The individuals, couples, and families with whom I work are interested in understanding and addressing not only certain specific emergent problems such as those associated with adjustment and relationship difficulties, depression, and anxiety, but also the underlying thoughts, feelings, and behavioral and relational patterns that have contributed to the development of these problems. Through a collaborative, empathic psychotherapeutic process, these individuals, couples, and families expand and utilize their skills, strengths, and self-understanding in order to live more meaningful and rewarding lives.

An important aspect of any therapeutic relationship is the rapport and ease you have in discussing your issues and concerns with your therapist. I believe the right fit between the client and therapist is in large part a function of the flexibility in approach and ways of intervening with you as an individual client. I see the therapeutic relationship as being a collaborative partnership that is outcome focused in addressing your issues and concerns. The emphasis is on doing what is most effective in moving you toward your desired outcomes in the least amount of time possible.

I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals, families couples, and groups. My educational background includes a Ph.D. in Family Studies, a MA in Counseling, and a BA in Family Life Education. I worked in family preservation for over 10 years, I am certified in treating sexual addictions, sexual abuse recovery, and facilitating life skills. I am experienced in offering support for grief, change of life, and parenting. I am also educated and experienced in crisis intervention including but not limited to mental health emergencies, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

I bring 30+ years of working with people who have struggled with such issues. In addition, as a faculty member of the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Psychiatry and the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute, I have taught courses in the treatment of anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships, and treatment of adult survivors of childhood abuse, for which I have received teaching awards.

I’ve focused on providing confidential psychotherapy for men and young men for most of my career because guys in every stage of life need support that’s tailored to their unique concerns. In a typical course of therapy, we might start by identifying your goals and then get an action plan together that might include exploration of past issues and relationships, examining current issues and symptoms, examining your irrational core beliefs, and finally moving toward preparing for the future. Using positive psychology, we’ll identify the many unique strengths you have as a man and then we’ll build upon those strengths.

I believe that therapy is an ongoing conversation spread out over a period of time where I, as your therapist, get to know you and try to understand what is creating difficulty in your life. I believe that my job is to help create a nonjudgmental and comforting relationship where we can begin to understand you - together. I genuinely care about those I work with, and I believe this curious and compassionate approach is ultimately what makes therapy worthwhile. By understanding you and your challenges, we can help you take steps to truly improve your life.

I see therapy as a gateway to strengthening our authentic self through healing, learning, acceptance and growth. It is often through our self-proclaimed imperfections that we find the greatest gifts, insights and points of focus that help us understand and become clear about the path we are walking and the possibilities that are before us. We have all known suffering, loss, trauma and despair. These experiences may shape us but they do not have to define us.

I am currently doing teletherapy with all of my clients. Because of that, I can take clients from anywhere in Michigan. I enjoy working with clients who are up for a little work. I have a strong belief in the idea that therapy isn't something that is done to us, rather something we must take an active role in to see any true progress. I view therapy as another way to add more tools to our toolbox in an effort to better ourselves. My goal isn't to have a client for life; it is to teach the skills needed for my client to be their best selves, even after we have finished working together.
