Skill, experience and kindness are qualities many seek in a therapist. When you are suffering with personal problems, you want to know that you will be heard and understood in ways that will help you find ways to expand your own self-understanding. A good therapist - the right therapist for you - is one who can "think together" with you to help find new solutions to old problems. The Mel Bornstein Clinic for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy was established upon a 60-year tradition of offering just this kind of help.

During my 30+ years as a licensed clinical social worker in full time practice, I have learned that vulnerability is universal, and also, that people of all ages have internal resilience and enduring growth potential. Unresolved internal issues often get expressed through such symptoms as anxiety, sadness, feelings of low self-esteem and shame, feeling stuck in repeated patterns of behavior, and in unfulfilling relationships. Therapy offers an opportunity to work through and understand, thereby resolving, these difficulties.

You feel tired, stuck, and at battle with yourself. Despite feeling desperate to feel and do something different, you constantly find yourself in the same old patterns. You feel disconnected from your body. You can't help but replay the same painful memories, worries, and negative self-talk in your mind. Maybe you've tried self-care practices, meditation, or yoga and they helped, but you can't shake the feeling that there's more to explore on your healing path. We are here for people with the desire to look inward and make the changes in your life that you have been craving.

Teletherapy in MI, WA, and VT; in person MI. If you're an adult or college student experiencing anxiety, depression, climate anxiety, or other concerns, you deserve support. My approach focuses on how you have developed as a person, how context affects your life, and how your symptoms are playing a role in your life. The end result of therapy can be not only a change in your symptoms but also a deeper self-awareness and a greater satisfaction in many areas of your life. I've worked and trained in community clinics, a college counseling center, and in hospital outpatient and inpatient clinics, as well as in climate-conscious therapy.

Life is full of change. Sometimes, change that we set in motion ourselves but often change that is an unwelcome surprise. Life transitions can be challenging and painful as well as a tremendous opportunity for deep reflection and personal growth. Moving across country, becoming a parent, adjusting to a new job or retirement, coping with divorce or grieving the loss of a loved one; managing these challenges intentionally and effectively will pave the way for what comes next.

As a psychotherapist, I have been profoundly touched by survivors of trauma, particularly extreme trauma, ritual abuse, mind control, clergy abuse, & spiritual abuse. Unfortunately, I am no longer taking new clients. But I am available for consultations to answer your questions or guide you in getting help. I am also developing a treatment model, The Migration Model, still in the testing phase, to remove mind control for ritual abuse/DID clients. (See www.ra-free.org). I provide intensives of 6 hours per day over 2+ days in my Ann Arbor, Michigan office using this model. But you must be in therapy with a licensed therapist.

*Not currently accepting new clients* Nobody should struggle alone. I am a clinical psychologist providing therapy to children, teens, young adults, couples, and families. While adopting a non-judgmental and empowering stance, I provide concrete tools to help clients improve their relationships, learn about themselves, explore their identity, and develop coping skills to better manage difficult situations. While helping clients to grow and change, I also support their development of self-compassion and self-acceptance. I have specialized training working with individuals who struggle with ADHD, anxiety, trauma, OCD, and depression.

Hi, I'm happy you're here. My clients are young adults and college students who are ready to break free from the unhelpful patterns that have them feeling stuck, by digging deep into their inner-world. Some of life’s greatest challenges present themselves during early adulthood. Likely because, we set unrealistic expectations for how we should be showing up for ourselves and others. Do you need a non-judgmental space to process a difficult life transition? Do you need support in healing from traumas that have impacted your life? I can help you to overcome these challenges and brave your world with courage and confidence.

I feel humbled to be invited into people’s lives through the therapy process. I work hard to build good therapeutic relationships by creating safe and affirming spaces for clients to share their life stories. I believe that radical honesty is a foundation to the healing and transformation process. By partnering with people in the therapeutic process, individuals will feel empowered to improve their quality of their life.

Emotional distress takes many forms: low self esteem, depression, anxiety, chronic anger, and/or relationship problems are some of the reasons people come to therapy. Some people who see me are having a difficult time with a life transition or have been unable to bounce back from a significant loss. Some have a history of being traumatized in ways that still impact them, or have problematic and unproductive ways of coping with life's difficulties.

Since 1977 I"ve worked as a therapist with Individuals,Couples and Families. I have found that people usually come to therapy because of some pattern of internal pain or difficulties within their relationships or daily lives. Often this pain involves feelings of: anxiety, sadness or depression, loneliness, grief, stress, frustration or anger, as well as behaviors that at times are ineffective, self-sabatoging or addictive in nature.
I work in a respectful, confidential, compassionate, and collaborative way. I am professional, very direct and honest, while honoring your feelings and values.

All of us encounter challenges in life that can at times overwhelm us. Therapy provides a safe place to process confusing emotions, get objective feedback, learn effective ways to cope and heal. If you feel like you continue to experience the same challenges no matter what you try you may be starting to think things will never change. Please don't give up hope. I would be honored to come along side of you to help you to recognize your strengths, cope with the challenges you are facing, heal from past hurts, and find what brings you joy.

You are the expert of your life and your family. My goal is to create a non-judgmental, therapeutic space for us to work together to explore any doubts, overwhelming feelings, or past experiences that are affecting the present. Whatever you are going through, you do not have to feel alone. I would love to be invited into your world as a partner in working through this time together. I enjoy working with people of all ages and have a special interest in working with children, those transitioning into parenthood, or finding parenting harder than they expected.

I have had 38 years' experience in addictions treatment as well as childhood sexual abuse/trauma. My client population consists of those with co-existing disorders (i.e., addiction/trauma and other mood disorders) codependency issues for partners and parents of addicts, Adult Children of Alcoholics issues and other related areas. I also do assessments for addiction. I see mostly adults, often women, and I do well with younger people in high school and college.

As a therapist, I approach all of my work from a social justice framework. I enjoy working with clients from diverse backgrounds, including those struggling with chronic disabilities. I work with clients to set realistic, attainable goals for treatment and I aim for transparency in everything that I do. I particularly enjoy supporting women, members of the LGBTQ community and clients from other marginalized groups, as I understand the struggles well. I am culturally Deaf and fluent in ASL, and as such, I serve many Deaf clients. However, spoken English is my native language, so many of my clients are also hearing.

When life just gets too hard, my job is to help empower people to get where they want and need to be. Whether a person is struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, life transitions, family of origin issues, current relationships, or problems at work, I put my all into working alongside clients to draw out internal strengths and build a new, wonderful life. I am here to listen and to work alongside them so that they leave therapy much stronger and more hopeful than when they first came in. Together, we draw out strengths, transform old patterns, and build toward a new life: Life can get better!

Maybe you've been diagnosed with a long term illness or have had symptoms for years and at times you don’t recognize yourself anymore. You know these health struggles are somehow behind your depressed and anxious feelings, and you feel alone…like no one understands. Right now, you may have more questions than answers, but one thing you know for sure is that you’d do anything to get your life back. You grieve for the person you used to be and find it hard to imagine yourself living a worthwhile life with this illness trying to drag you down every chance it gets. (Due to demand, I ONLY accept clients with chronic illness concerns)

How can I find a therapist in Ann Arbor?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
