Big life changes, like leaving a job to pursue a passion or moving to a new city to start a new life chapter & anything in between, can be hard to navigate. While these can be exciting adventures, these changes can surface lots of difficult feelings in addition to painful memories of moments from our past. Sometimes we feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed & lost in these situations. Many of us are told to feel happy about these changes, but that might not align with our lived experiences. You’re not alone in this - we can work together to help you find comfort in navigating all of these things.

Not accepting clients at this time - Psychotherapy comes from the Latin for "soul healing," and I aim to support you as you heal your whole self: mind, body, and soul. We will build on your strengths and work as a team to help you gain the clarity you need to achieve your goals. Working from a multicultural framework, I am committed to empowerment, self-advocacy, and "meeting you where you're at" on your path to wellness. Humor is also important to me, and I hope we can find ways to laugh together as we navigate our messy, complex world.

I am passionate about helping people grow and change. I have received training from some of the nation's foremost experts in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), though experience has taught me the importance of integrating other treatment models as well. I enjoy doing therapy and have a wealth of experience treating a variety of presenting problems. I particularly enjoy working with veterans, athletes and men's issues. Feel free to reach out to me. If for some reason I am unable to see you personally, I can likely direct you to a colleague who will be the right fit.

Psychotherapy, if done well, provides participants with the gift of self-understanding. That self understanding, I have found, comes from the experience of being listened to and understood by a sensitive and knowledgeable therapist. But in addition, psychotherapy needs to practically address problems. I have extensive training in contemporary psychoanalytic approaches, which allows me to help patients understand themselves more deeply; often this produces profound changes. But when problems require practical techniques, I integrate aspects of cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and humanistic approaches.

You are exhausted from holding it together all the time. It feels too much to hold. You avoid situations that remind you of the bad thing that happened. You constantly feel like you are on alert, like you are looking over your shoulder for a threat. You question if you are deserving of love and connection. You feel unlovable and as though there is something wrong with you. It seems like you have lost your way, but you know there is more to you than your past. You are ready to heal and motivated to reach your potential. You know this is the time for change but you aren't sure where to turn or what to do.

Getting by in today's society can be a task that feels insurmountable, whether you're grappling with a mental health concern, addiction, or simply facing a major life transition like adjusting to parenthood. Far too often we expect ourselves to go it alone, when a little communication from an outside perspective can go a long way. I am a licensed clinical social worker with a strong foundation in substance abuse and mental health care which has allowed me to support folks in expressing and managing difficult emotions while learning new coping skills and positive thought processes that highlight their existing strengths and values.

I provide a safe space for recovery from Eating Disorders, Trauma, Anxiety & Depression and realize these issues are more prevalent than ever. Many of us didn't get the guidance or safety we needed to build the kind of awareness or skill-set needed to calm ourselves or even recognize the emotions that we all have. My focus is to help my clients feel safe, so they can explore and name their emotions, needs and what type of skills might help them to soothe through whatever difficulties come their way. My hope is that you will feel you have more space for what you want in your life and less of the racing thoughts, discomfort and pain.

Over the past 20+ years I've worked together with clients as they develop new ways to live with the challenges they face. It's been a privilege to do so. Anxiety, sadness, lonliness, lowered self-esteem, and difficulties in relationships all can interfere with the lives we hope to live. I work to understand the way these difficulties have developed and how these function in daily life. Then, together with the client, I use symptom focused and short-term treatments to address the difficulties within the larger context of their meaning in each client's life.

Life presents each of us with a rich tapestry of joys and sorrows, successes and failures, hills and valleys. Perhaps you have recently encountered a hardship in your life. Maybe you are surrounded with the trappings of a "successful" life, yet deep down, you still feel unhappy. You might feel pulled in all directions by the demands associated with each of your roles in life (e.g. spouse, sibling, child, co-worker, friend, etc.) You may find yourself overspending, working too much, or engaging in other self-defeating habits. Being a human being is hard work. None of us are meant to travel the complex road of life by ourselves.

How can I find a therapist in Ann Arbor?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
