M.A.P.S is committed to meeting the needs of students, schools and the community. Our school-based and telehealth K-5 services, as well as C.H.A.T. - Confidential Help Available to Teens, both provide very experienced and qualified mental health professionals to help our clients achieve stability, health and structure for a successful school experience, and a bright future. We customize our services to meet the needs of schools, because we understand that every school is unique, and requires a service that supports the school culture as well as the individual students. We understand that students thrive when they feel their best, and that starts with good mental health. When grief,
anger
, addiction, identity difficulties and anxiety go untreated, it can lead to acting out, school failure and even violence. We are here to help, and it's what we love to do. We help decrease crisis events, and work with your staff to create approaches that make students feel safe and important, as they get the help that they need.

You have been sitting with your thoughts and seem to recycle your memories. You are excellent at suppressing your hurt and stay busy with work and life as a distraction. You no longer connect with others the way you used to and keep friends and family at a distance. The Pandemic may have increased your anxiety and depression and you are uncertain where to begin. Your worry and fear come out as:
anger
, sadness and controlling behaviors, due to questioning your worth and self esteem. Will I ever feel truly happy? Will I feel truly loved? Will I find my life path and the career that makes my soul soar? Will I learn to forgive?

My clients struggle with various issues: anxiety, depression,
anger
, relationship challenges, divorce / break-ups, parenting concerns, medical challenges, etc. They come to me facing ongoing loneliness, sadness, and fear. My clients expect a compassionate space in which to explore their difficulties; unconditional positive regard from me to them. I honor clients where they are at and partner with them to facilitate the healing necessary to get them to where they want to be. My clients explore how their experiences in early childhood shaped how they show up in the world on a day to day basis, sometimes in unexpected ways.

Emotional distress takes many forms: low self esteem, depression, anxiety, chronic
anger
, and/or relationship problems are some of the reasons people come to therapy. Some people who see me are having a difficult time with a life transition or have been unable to bounce back from a significant loss. Some have a history of being traumatized in ways that still impact them, or have problematic and unproductive ways of coping with life's difficulties.

I have helped people with struggles related to fear, terror, shame, jealousy, humiliation, guilt, sadness,
anger
, excitement, joy, and passion.
Trained at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a clinical psychologist, I believe that I have developed a compassionate, effective approach to helping people. My work is primarily informed by a psychodynamic framework and also contains elements of cognitive behavioral techniques and family systems thinking. I am convinced that the heart of psychotherapy involves a conversation and meaningful engagement between the patient and the therapist.

Change is the only constant in life: we live in a complex, busy, and changing world that presents a variety of challenges, as well as opportunities, in our everyday lives. Our biological and psychological makeup, as well as our cultural, social, and family backgrounds and support systems, has a lot to do with the ways we deal with these challenges.

Psychotherapy can help. At its heart, psychotherapy is about listening. And you, feeling truly heard in a new, and refreshing way. As a therapist I strive to listen with compassion and interest to help my clients hear their own voice. Reflected, this offers possibilities for greater self understanding, change, and new direction. The therapeutic relationship serves as a catalyst for the positive changes that you as a client seek.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
