I have experience with
adoption
/attachment, to sexual trauma, to depression/anxiety, and/or substance abuse. I am LGBTQ+ affirming, knowledgeable about polyamorous relationships, as well as kink friendly. Clients who are ready to make a change in their lives or their way of thinking will find the most success working with me. Change is scary but if the way you've been isn't serving you then let's create a new picture of it the way you want it to be. Change might be scary but the only thing scarier is staying unhappy.

Divorce, physical or sexual abuse and other traumas, attachment difficulties, and
adoption
issues are all areas in which I have extensive experience.
Relationships are central to my work, whether it be the relationship between a child or adult and myself, or the complex web of relationships within a family. My training and experience in Infant Mental Health--a type of therapy focusing on the attachment relationship between a primary caregiver and and an infant or young child--permeates all aspects of my work. I believe that therapy cannot separate an individual from the context of his or her relationships, past or present. I am creative and flexible in my approach to working with the children, teens, adults and families that I serve.

Unresolved trauma can create invisible emotional wounds. The deep emotional scarring of these wounds can negatively impact both personal and professional lives. Early trauma is often at the root of mental illness, including depression and anxiety. I specialize in trauma focused therapy solutions for adults and children. In my office, you will find a safe space where you can express yourself and move toward your desired goals in a healthy and healing way. Our relationship will be built on the four pillars of healing: trust, safety, support and hope.

Have you been in survival mode for too long? Are you parenting a child with big behaviors or emotions? Or are you working so hard to reparent yourself while simultaneously parenting small people with big needs? Parenting a child who is struggling is stressful even in the best of times. Maybe the thought "this isn't what (or the child) I was expecting" has even run through your mind. Whether you planned for pregnancy, fostering or adopting, you likely dreamed of love, connection and joy. And now you are not sure how to get there from here. Or if it is even possible. It really is! There is always room for hope.

Making the choice to seek and begin therapy can take a lot of courage, yet it is often the first step towards resolving those issues in our lives that take away from the happiness and fulfillment that we deserve. I strongly feel that effective therapy is dependent on a good fit between a client and clinician where collaboration is encouraged. I believe it is best to tailor my therapeutic approach based on the individual's goals, personality, and lifestyle. It is my priority to create a safe space and nonjudgmental environment where people can gain clarity, self- awarenss, empowerment and overcome personal challenges.

I use a strength based, collaborative, and mindful approach during treatment. I practice from a trauma and attachment based lens bringing mindfulness and curiosity into each session. For over 15 years, I have been successfully working with children, youth and families. Together we will explore past and current stressors and how these experiences have impacted habits and coping styles with an understanding that each of us adapts the best that we can to obstacles in life. We will look at areas in your life where you are feeling stuck and explore what you need to move forward.

I am most qualified to treat people who are having problems in living fulfilling lives because of troubling symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression) or general dissatisfaction with themselves and relationships. I believe my treatment approach contributes to personal growth at any age. My rigorous training, 10 years post-Ph.D. has qualified me as a Training/Supervising Analyst who treats other therapists, and supervises other therapists--psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers in their work with adults, children and adolescents. As a Certified Sex Therapist, I treat sexual and marital dysfunctions. As a child psychoanalyst, I treat children and work with parents in parent guidance.

My approach to psychotherapy begins with my belief in the strengths and healing abilities of all human beings. Using these strengths and accessing additional healing resources makes the process inordinately easier, more empowering and even enjoyable. I work from a perspective that emphasizes the dysfuntional beliefs that we each have learned about ourselves and our world, working to identify, challenge and modify these beliefs. Together, we look at this within the context of family and society to gain an understanding of how we got where we are. Sometimes this is straightforward, and often it is not (see below).

My approach to the therapeutic relationship is to establish a warm, collaborative, supportive, and useful relationship that helps the client meet their personal needs for emotional growth, healthy relationships, and understanding their deep-seated reactions to their environment. I strive to meet people where they are at, without judgement, to help overcome any barriers they are facing externally or internally. I rely on establishing a relationship where all emotions/needs/fears/critiques are welcome, and everything is worth talking through in a safe space. I am committed to anti-racism, queer-friendliness, and I reject diet culture.

If you or a loved one feel persistently depressed, disappointed or anxious, if you're struggling in relationships or can't move forward in work or school, therapy can be a life-changing opportunity. Therapy is a uniquely safe way to deal with troubling and painful feelings, and to resolve the inner conflicts and blocks that get in the way of fulfilling life goals. With over 30 years professional experience, and with advanced training not only in clinical psychology but in psychoanalysis as well, I have been privileged to help many to find greater success and contentment in their lives.

If you are struggling in an important relationship, whether with your partner, child, parent, sibling, or friend, or feel deeply lonely, anxious, sad, or self-doubting, therapy can be an important step towards growth and healing. I think of therapy as an opportunity not only to seek support, but also to build a collaborative working relationship within which a deeper understanding of your hopes and fears enables you to make significant change.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
