I believe that we all find ourselves in stuck places throughout our lives with confusion and overwhelm about where to go and what to do next. It is even more challenging when we are isolated in these places, not knowing who to trust or who will show up for us. This is where counseling comes in as a compassionate space that encourages the person to keep going and to know themselves more deeply in the process.

Therapy can be many things: rewarding, healing, challenging- but I believe it should always be done in partnership. I see change in counseling happening through a strong therapeutic relationship built on mutual trust and collaboration. I will work with you to build insight and understanding using interventions and strategies tailored to meet your unique needs. We will collaborate together to make goals and work toward them in a supportive, affirming environment. I always emphasize that each person is the expert on their lived experience and will check in to make sure you are personally experiencing the change you deserve.

My goal is to assist clients through the change process. I know that therapy can help clients regain a sense of control in their lives and improve their relationships. So many people yearn for the ability to enjoy their lives and relationships but feel stuck in a never-ending cycle of stress and crisis. However, the effects of stress and trauma are not something you just have to endure. It is possible to feel better.

We all have strengths and gifts we have yet to discover. Often, it takes challenging times in our life for us to find these hidden aspects of ourselves. Such challenges include (but are not limited to) feelings of deep sadness, anxiety, anger, frustration, exhaustion, unexpected loss, a sense of being stuck in life, struggles with substance use, or dissatisfaction with the quality of our relationships.

Hello! Life has a way of coming at us in the most unpredictable, unimaginable ways. This can make the most "put-together-person" crumble. If you are feeling overwhelmed, scared, angry, confused, alone, helpless, worthless, stressed, lost, sad, or if you're looking for someone to help you grow into your ideal self.... you've come to the right place! We are humans. We make mistakes, we fall down, we get hurt, life is messy, and it gets to be too much and is seemingly unmanageable for us. With some help, we will go through the process of rebuilding, stand back up and then become stronger than we were before.

Healing shouldn't be a struggle; it’s a journey toward liberation. I approach therapy with the belief that it doesn’t need to leave you with a “thinking hangover” between sessions. Instead, we’ll dive into a different way of healing—one that prioritizes your body’s wisdom and innate responses. My goal is to help you feel safe and grounded in your own skin, fostering a deeper connection with yourself. My passion lies in helping humans who have faced trauma, particularly those struggling with disconnection and a sense of unsafety in their relationships or attempting to balance substance use with mental wellness responses.

People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

I approach each session with a nonjudgmental, empathetic, and listening ear. I offer support to help you examine your life to identify current struggles and areas of potential growth. Together we will focus on your personal development, while also introducing techniques that will improve your relationships with yourself and others. I feel it is important to meet people where they are at but still encourage goal setting. While working with you, I look at how past experiences, including trauma, affect your current functioning.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
