I have particular expertise addressing LGBT topics, men's issues, topics of identity and oppression, as well as supporting clients with relationship and interpersonal style concerns.
My PhD training as a counseling psychologist affords me flexibility to support multiple life concerns, and at the root of my work is the belief that relationships are capable of healing. I build strong alliances with those whom I serve in order to best meet client directed goals and foster sustained change. I adhere to evidence-based practices in psychology, and research evidence strongly supports the importance of building a strong therapeutic alliance. Everyone has a unique lens through which they see the world and I strive to see the world as my clients do to provide the best care.

Life is difficult. All of us are faced with stress, pain, loss, and feeling out of control in our lives. Sometimes, even the strongest people you know need a little bit of help to work through life’s more difficult problems. You may be experiencing some of your own life’s challenges and feel you have done all you can to cope, yet find things are not changing or improving. You may not know exactly where to go for help, who the best person would be to talk to, or what to expect from therapy. These are normal questions and concerns. All of us here at New Beginnings Counseling Group want to reassure you…You are in the right place!

I have always been interested in people’s stories, understanding how they see the world as they do, and how they have overcome challenges. Each of us has a rich, often complicated history that led us to the present moment. As a psychologist, it is an honor and privilege to get to know my patients’ histories, understand what got them here, and help them to be who they want to be in the world.

Are you in your head worried too much? Are you reactive to those you are close to? Have you lost the security of your most important relationships? No longer have the same dreams, hopes, and ambitions? Your pain is real. Counseling works! I want everyone to know that you don't have to be at your rock bottom to seek help. Everyone benefits from going to counseling! Those you look up to most and you see as being at their very best, see a therapist, and have regular therapy sessions.

I've heard of people reaching out for help, but they've had to wait on a waitlist for months. I will return your inquiries within 24 hours. And we can setup our first meeting within one (1) week. However, I only see people via telehealth, and I don't take any insurances. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, coping with addictions, relationship issues, & trauma and abuse. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts, feelings, and any other issues of concern can be shared without fear of judgment.

Here at SoulWise Therapy, we utilize evidence-based therapies to quickly treat mental health issues. Traditional psychotherapies rely on talk therapy to heal trauma, depression, anxiety, and the many other troubles we face. These methods can be effective but often require someone to spend months or even years in therapy. Instead of keeping you in therapy for the next 10 years, we use ART, Brainspotting, BWRT, & EMDR to speed up your healing and get you back to living life at its fullest. These advanced therapies target the brain's reptilian complex, which is responsible for our body's response to trauma (fight, flight, freeze).

I am accepting new clients and offer Online Counseling via Telehealth. I've provided over 10,000 hours of therapy and like Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life." I managed LDS Family Services for 13 years and loved directing the 12-step Addiction Recovery Program in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. I've been recruited by multiple residential treatment centers, a hospital, a skilled nursing facility, and by an IOP program assessing and treating substance abuse and domestic violence.

Couples often long to feel close but get stuck in their problems. It can seem like there’s no way out of emotional conflicts, sexual difficulties, past mistakes in the relationship, or other issues. I believe in healing that gets to the root – healing that is deep, self-reflective, compassionate, honest, and real. I work with clients and their partners and family members to heal from difficult past experiences, trauma, and current conflicts toward brighter futures, stronger relationships, and a more secure sense of self.

Finding a therapist you connect with can make all the difference in your progress in therapy.  I have found that the bredth of my knowledge drives the depth of my work.  I pull from my love of reading, philosophy, history, neuroscience, and well timed humor to help drive a point home. I often hear from my clients that they know they will be challenged but cared for when working with me. Whether it is diffucult struggles, life transitions, mental health battles, existential turmoil, or goal setting, I'm here for you and your loved ones. I genuinely consider it my life's work.

I like to come at therapy kind of like I would a drummer at a jam session. I'm there to find a groove with another voice. I want to communicate with you and help you to open up and learn to express yourself. We will seek understanding first and then we will find a way to encourage healing and growth that is unique to you and builds a stronger identity. I am strengths-based and I like to find existing skills to help a client build a new way of thinking and interacting with their body. This is also a very effective way of beginning the process of healing symptoms of PTSD in conjunction with other evidence based trauma treatments.

Immediate Openings. It can be daunting and freeing to ask for help. Life can be hard and overwhelming at times, but there is hope in healing. As a therapist, here is my goal: create a safe, compassionate, and curious space where you can start the healing process. Together we will examine the patterns that have you seeking change, process how you and your environment interact, and explore those inner voices that can build you up and, at times, tear you down.

I believe that real growth and deep change is possible with the right therapeutic relationship. I love witnessing this growth and change my clients experience in therapy. Through this process, my clients heal past wounds, overcome addictive tendencies, and connect more deeply to themselves and others.

I base my approach to psychotherapy on understanding your world, your experiences, your story, and on exploring with you how this life-narrative is shaping your current everyday reality. We will explore your experiences in the context of human existence towards a therapy that is more life-changing than symptom reducing. Real therapy can unearth a path for making peace with life and your place in it. As your therapist, I strive to work with sincerity and authenticity throughout your process.

I’ve helped many people in my career who have struggled with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and relationship difficulties because of trauma, abuse, loss, or other high-stress experiences from their past. It’s not just the events we’ve experienced, but rather the result of how those events continue to affect us. I help patients retain learning and wisdom from their past but lose the pain. Everyone who steps into my office will be valued, heard, and respected no matter how difficult the issues may be to talk about. I respect and treat each person as I would want my own family member treated.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
