When we adapt to an oppressive environment, we are often left feeling scattered, anxious, depressed, numb, and disconnected. What’s really tricky is that we’re often not even aware of how we ended up there, we just know that it hurts. In therapy, you can learn how to widen your awareness of yourself, to encounter and even befriend the parts of yourself that cause tension and conflict in your everyday life.

Sometimes it’s painful to face things about ourselves or our situations that we would rather ignore. It's worth it to face them because it gives us the opportunity to look at things from a different perspective, to ask different questions, to challenge ourselves, and ultimately to get more of what we want out of life. Understanding where we've been and how we got here is important, but in order to feel better, we often have to do something different. In therapy we can learn to identify what the options are, evaluate the risks and benefits of different options, and make the best choice for ourselves.

My psychology and counseling practice is the expansion of identities through awareness and compassion not just solving problems. Your journey has been one with twists and turns and taking the first step to contact me may feel uncertain. Given life can feel like a maze, I make our initial contact straightforward as possible. For 25 years I’ve helped people clear the way to the freedom of their true nature in psychotherapy as well as hypnotherapy. I’ve worked as a crisis worker in ERs, to chief auditor for mental health services in Silicon Valley, to developing a successful counseling training center focused on mindfulness

I’m Dr. Sara Aslan, PhD, I am a licensed Psychologist, I have been providing therapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families for over 14 years. I am currently providing virtual sessions to adults and adolescents residing in Oregon, Washington, and PSYPACT states; and in-person sessions in the Portland, Oregon area. I provide useful and in-depth psychotherapy in Connecticut, New York, Oregon, & California. People are in a constant developmental process, whereby symptoms are signs of ongoing struggles to sort through past experiences while organizing oneself in present living. Depression, anxiety, & personality traits are markers of this process. Therapy with me would seek to aid in your understanding of how & why you live the way you do, and hopefully lead to change. My hope is that we can find a way for you to live more fully and for problems to be comprehensively understood, formulated and articulated, and resolved in a sustained way.

I enjoy working with people who seek both short term solution-focused therapy and those who choose to pursue longer term goals of personality change in the context of depth psychology. There are truly many paths to achieving significant relief from symptoms of loss, depression, and anxiety or a change in one's personal situation. I view the therapeutic journey as Herodotus understood the original meaning of the word history (historous): not as a noun (i.e. a fixed thing) but a verb: literally to go and find out for one's self.

Life and living only exist in the present moment. Our untrained mind often causes us suffering when it dwells on past experiences, or future fears, clouding this moment where living actually occures. Depression, anxiety, our beliefs about our selves and others, all stem from these unnecessary thoughts and their related emotions. Our mind must come to realize that it is the cause of its own unhappiness. Then whatever we experience in life is no longer overwhelming. I have an appreciation and grounding in western oriented psychodynamics enriched with an eastern psychological and Spiritual perspective. Please visit my website: kennethandert.com

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
