Welcome to a space where understanding and resilience meet. I am Stephen Rodgers, a therapist deeply committed to specializing in men's issues and trauma. In a world that frequently leans on men for strength, it's essential to acknowledge that everyone, at times, faces challenges that seem insurmountable. Whether it’s the weight of past experiences or the complexities of anxiety and depression impacting your relationships, habits, and emotional wellbeing, these struggles can be both bewildering and disheartening, especially when juxtaposed with societal expectations of unwavering self-sufficiency.

I've been working in the mental health field for over 20 years. I've worked with a wide range of issues including but not limited to addictions, anxiety, depression, bi-polar, stress and anger management, men's issues, PTSD, work/life transitions, and couples/relationship issues. I work best with clients who feel stuck, have tried some things on their own that just haven't worked, and need that extra bit of guidance to get to where they want to be, personally and professionally.

Do you finally feel ready to verbalize and process the pain, trauma, or shame you’ve been holding on to? You may be fed up with feeling isolated, disconnected from your experience, and misunderstood by others. Maybe life feels too overwhelming and confusing for you right now (and that's ok). But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to no longer feel burdened by feelings of guilt, fear, or shame. You’re ready to feel more alive, free and connected to yourself & others. Most of all, you’re ready to live your life with a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. If that resonates with you, I would love to help.

I seek to work with individuals who are moving toward change, perhaps only knowing that change as a feeling, an inclination, and a belief there is a need for this change. They are driven to reveal more of themselves that has been muted by whatever patterns they've assumed. I believe we all pick up things along the way that we think we have to be or must do to get what we need. My aim is to walk alongside you and see if there are some things we are carrying that no longer serve who we are trying to be and/or become. My purpose is to listen past the words used and get to the true intention of what is longing to be heard.

My therapeutic style is welcoming, grounding, and curious. I aim for therapy to be a collaborative space for authentic exploration, which I approach from a open and curious stance. I believe my clients are the experts of their own experiences, and it is my honor and duty to use my knowledge to assist my clients in unfolding, understanding, integrating, and blossoming into their authentic, functional self. To assist my clients in this process, I often utilize personalized metaphor, analogy, reflection, and humor to both support and challenge each client. There are times in life when one needs backup. Do not "go-it-alone" when it comes to life's challenges, but let me assist you on your path. The only constant in life is change and they come with personal, relational, and professional adjustments. Navigating the changes can be smoother with a trained professional behind you. We all have blind spots, even in the things we are best at doing. So trained perspective can help us discover them and tap into our inner wisdom to make our own decisions.

I work best with clients who are looking inward to illuminate their path forward. I'm passionate about working with couples/relationships to navigate conflict, create connection, build emotional/physical intimacy, heal relationship injuries, decide when to stay together or gracefully separate, and to help new relationships build bonds that will help them thrive. I am also excited to work with individuals by helping them discover themselves and find healing. I believe that our pain and struggles, as well as healing, are often connected to our relationships – with ourselves, our partners and families, and the cultures we live in.

(Scheduling in-person and Zoom now) Sometimes we experience disturbing levels of anxiety, depression, anger, or loss. Sometimes we feel disconnected or not able to get a handle on things. In those times emotions can be overwhelming or confusing, and our usual ways of dealing with life don't seem to work anymore. Therapy offers a way to increase awareness of who we are, measure our limits, and expand our personal and interpersonal abilities to make significant changes. I believe we have within us the potential for a healthy and creative life. In the therapy process, we have an opportunity to discover and unleash that potential.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
