My work is about helping clients; whether a problem to be solved, a desired behavioral change, or finding meaning during a life challenging experience. I encourage individuals to contact me and explore that change. I am here to help.

I also have extensive experience working with men's issues, including addressing concerns related to masculinity and gender roles, issues of identity, and learning to better experience and express a full range of emotions in a healthy way; for many men, this also means redefining their relationship with anger.
I provide psychotherapy for individual adults and adolescents, offering therapeutic support and interventions which are tailored to the unique needs and personalities of those whom I am fortunate to serve. Working from a disciplined eclectic perspective, I collaborate with my patients to discover new and more helpful ways to cope with life's challenges and work towards their goals and aspirations. Whether the work is short- or long-term in nature, my approach is grounded in the belief that every person deserves and benefits most from a course of treatment which is individually tailored to their specific strengths and challenges.

My specialties include complex trauma, childhood abuse/neglect, healing from narcissistic/abusive relationships, codependency and relationship problems, substance use disorders, masculinity and men's issues, parenting, and working with Asian American/minority issues such as family conflict, intergenerational trauma, cultural identity & racism.
Though I work with most issues, I specialize in helping people recover from complex trauma. People with narcissistic, abusive, or neglectful parents or partners sometimes develop issues with trusting themselves, have difficulty maintaining close relationships, struggle with an inner critic, vacillate often between depression and anxiety, lack a solid sense of identity, or feel a sense of emptiness when their lives seem great on paper. Sometimes that trauma can even become part of one's identity - I work with clients to build insight, boundaries, self-compassion, and acceptance to free themselves from it & live more fulfilling lives.

I am uniquely skilled in engaging the struggles related to men's issues, trauma, life transitions, spiritual development, and the LGBTQ community.
As a licensed therapist based in San Francisco, I help individuals, couples, and families dive beneath the surface-level issues to discover the underlying causes of their distress. Many men, women, and non-binary individuals who choose to work with me are at the grips of anxiety, depression, addiction, grief, or relationship challenges. Many are highly motivated professionals who are self-reliant and achievement-focused but often struggle with self-defeating thoughts and patterns that keep them stuck.

I have worked since 2005 with clients with depression, stress, men's issues, and other life challenges, primarily in community mental health with marginalized and underserved communities. I see people seeking support for many difficulties, including:imposter syndrome, self-esteem, boundaries, vulnerability, shame, communication skills, difficulty asking for help or saying "no," and more. Reducing self-judgment will help you to make better decisions that are aligned with your core values. This will ultimately free you from negative thoughts or worries so you are more fully available for all the important things in your life.

Growing up did you experience painful or confusing boundary violations? Did someone whom you trusted, respected, or even loved touch you or fondle you in a way that made you feel uncomfortable, scared, or perhaps even made you feel confused and pleasured? Do you feel embarrassed and bothered by your experience, and worry that others will not understand how you have been sexually violated and abused? Do you struggle with managing your romantic relationships, your friendships, as well as your emotions and thoughts because your past uncomfortable experience with sex have made sex and your sexuality confusing, uncomfortable or even overstimulating? You’re overthinking things, second-guessing yourself all the time, worried you’re not keeping up with your friends/peers. You want to be your best self, but not sure exactly what that is or how to get there. You’re afraid to do the wrong things at times and do nothing as a result. When you and your partner talk about your relationship you mean well, but say the wrong things or it comes out the wrong way. Falling short on friendships, dating and your career and you’re not sure why. You need clarity and a way to move forward, but turning to friends or family doesn’t feel like the way to go.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
