I believe that we all have the solutions to our problems within ourselves and through our personal experiences, we can find those solutions.
While my counseling experience has primarily focused on working with individuals struggling with substance use and abuse issues, the foundational component in this work has always been understanding and making change. Identifying things that are no longer working to resolve the problems they face and finding new solutions.
We are all capable of change and learning from our past, even if it doesn't seem that the past has anything to teach us, but our past is a critical component to understanding the present and ourselves. Understanding how our past has impacted where we are and who we are can help us decide where and who we want to be in the future.
