I am Melissa Gilliam, I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in working with young adults and adults who have suffered from trauma, family issues, sexual violence, relationships, and alcohol and drug addiction. Upon graduating from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 1984, I accepted a position with the State of Wisconsin, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation where I was employed for 33 as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor working with youth and adults with varied disabilities such as mental illness, substance abuse, deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired.
The most common therapy modality used in my practice is Psychodynamic therapy which involves talking to clients about all the issues they are faced with to determine how their childhood may have impacted their life today. Determining the onset of the traumatic event and how this emotionally affected them.
As a result of my childhood and growing up in a somewhat dysfunctional home, I found myself as the one who would always be the voice of reasoning, offering advice to older aunts, uncles, grandparents, and siblings. My family always came to me whenever there was a need to talk and I've always been there.
