Unknowingly, many couples waste valuable emotional energy focused upon the symptoms of an emotional issue instead of the issue itself. Symptoms such as infidelity, withdrawal, rage, abuse, etc., are often at the center of marital arguments. My approach is to invite the couple to consider the possibility that their ongoing arguments could be pointing to deeper unresolved issues within the marriage.
One of my therapeutic goals is the creation of a therapeutic environment that feels inviting enough for the couple to share their feelings. Asking questions that help marriage partners focus on the often hidden feelings instead of the obvious facts is one way I help bring about this safe therapeutic space.
