My name is Randy Carrin, Psy.D. I tailor my psychological treatment to the particular needs of my patients, and to specific therapeutic aims. I specialize in a cognitive-behavioral approach to successfully treat a multitude of psychological problems. Among these are anxiety and stress-related disorders; depressive disorders; pain-related disorders; chronic illness; post-traumatic stress; relationship difficulties; grief, loss and bereavement; HIV and AIDS; sexual difficulties; adoption-related issues; and the emotional upheaval associated with infertility. I generally treat adults and couples. Prior to establishing a practice in Waterbury, I worked elsewhere in Connecticut, and have also spent several years working and living abroad.

Synergy was born of a vision to create a better way to do healthcare for patients by doing healthcare differently. Our goal was to eliminate long wait times and crowded waiting rooms; in turn, we have elevated the patient experience at our office. We don't double or even triple book appointment times. I work with symptoms of anxiety disorders including panic, OCD and phobias using the most effective evidence-based, shorter-term cognitive behavioral and mindfulness based therapies which help reduce acute symptoms within weeks. For people seeking to overcome longer term depression, anger, low self-esteem and self-defeating habits that keep them from living life more fully, I use longer term insight-oriented psychotherapy.

I have worked in the field of mental health and addiction services for 34 years helping people cope with trauma, grief & loss, addictions, and major mental illness, assisting them to find ways to cope in this often difficult and challenging world. Most people have experienced some form of trauma, whether recently or in the past, or have had multiple, complex traumas over months & years. EMDR therapy is a powerful mode of treatment that I like to utilize in order to heal all of these types of traumas, whether single or complex. I believe in making positive life changes for emotional well being. My experience includes work with adults in individual counseling, group therapy, and hospital based intensive outpatient programs. Some treatment approaches I utilize include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, brief treatments, and an eclectic approach to meet the needs of individual clients. I have worked in settings including counseling centers, assisted living facilities and hospitals. Commonly experienced issues I have assisted clients in working through include behavioral issues, impulsivity, family conflict, loss, relationship issues, self esteem and self worth issues, and effectively managing mood disorders and personality disorders.

While I provide individual, couples and family work for all people, my special interest is to support minority populations. My primary expertise is providing counseling and supportive services for the LGBTQIA+ community. As human beings, we all struggle with feelings of not being good enough, important enough, lovable or able to love. These feelings embed themselves very early in life producing defense mechanisms that, although no longer needed, continue to operate below the surface; wreaking havoc on life, relationships and personal success. The battle is often a daily one; sometimes minute by minute. Don't suffer alone.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience working with older adults and their families. As people age, a variety of issues may arise such as loss of independence, loss of loved ones, changes in family dynamics and possibly the onset of medical and/or mental health illness. Showing understanding and validating feelings through this life stage is the basis of my work. Through identifying fears related to change and loss, I strive to help clients move toward finding greater fulfillment in their lives.

I am a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner with fellowship training in Integrative/ Functional Medicine. My approach to treatment is holistic and draws from my training in integrative/ functional medicine. I include lifestyle modification and at times natural remedies, supplements, IV vitamin therapy and other adjunct treatment into my practice as it is appropriate. I utilize DNA swab testing as necessary to guide best pharmacological options. I offer Ketamine and Spravato treatment as well.
