I entered the field of counseling because of a desire to help those in crisis or who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. I realized I wanted to be a counselor while working at a local community college. I saw students who were struggling academically but were very bright. I came to understand that there are many factors that go into being successful at life. I have always had a helping nature but didn’t fully understand why people behaved they way they did. Through my education and experience I can now help people in their personal lives, relationships and careers.

Dr. Steven Powell graduated from University of Texas and attended Rush Medical College to complete his family medicine residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He has worked at Barrio Comprehensive Health Center in San Antonio, as Medical Director, as well as Austin Regional Clinic where he also served as a board member. Board certified in Family Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Texas Medical Association, Dr. Powell has had an interest and commitment to addiction treatment in primary care since 2008, treating hundreds of patients with medication assisted therapy.

RJ earned a Master of Arts in Addiction Counseling from the world-renowned Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies at the Center City, Minnesota alcohol and drug addiction treatment center. HGSAS offered a unique curriculum that integrates theory, science and clinical practice. RJ is a member of the American Counseling Association. RJ is bilingual in both English and Spanish.
