I also have spent a great deal of my career working with neurodivergent folks navigating the unique challenges of functioning in a neurotypical world.
My approach to therapy is eclectic. I see our work as an opportunity to collaborate. You have expertise in yourself, your lived experiences, your strengths and struggles; all of which you bring to the table to work with in therapy. I use several different therapeutic modalities depending on each person’s individual needs and where they are at in life.

As humans, we are designed to seek safe and secure connections, which includes unwavering acceptance and support, particularly in the face of adversity. Unfortunately, some people in childhood through adulthood do not receive nurturance which would enable them to gain healthy self-concept. This lack of support can contribute to maladaptive coping strategies including issues with substances, relationships, and career. I aim to provide a safe haven and secure base for individuals and couples to address these issues, receive support, and gain holistic balance. I am passionate about serving LGBTQ+, particularly bisexual, clients.

I work with people who have trouble with relationships, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, rage fits, addiction/alcohol, have gone through trauma, racing thoughts and/or grew up in unhealthy homes. People who at times wish they could escape life and need support to remember how to smile, or sometimes learn how to smile (for real) for the first time. If someone uses legal and/or illegal substances and wants to quit or not, I support your decision. If you want to ease your anxiety, anger, trauma and/or sadness and want to feel happy, I believe you deserve that! :)

How do our values impact our actions? How do our intersecting identities impact our lives? How do we create mindful attention to our whole experiences, even those that are painful? What are our nervous systems telling us? I am interested in exploring difficult questions with you and helping you examine and find acceptance in the story you tell yourself about your life. I see us as a pair of archaeologists on a dig: examining artifacts and exploring their significance.

I provide autism evaluations for toddlers, children, teens, and adults, with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and meaningful next steps.
While autism is the primary focus, I also specialize in careful differentiation, including distinguishing autism from or identifying co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. This is especially important when presentations are complex, subtle, or have been previously misunderstood.

I specialize in working with neurodivergent parents of neurodivergent kids — whether you've been formally diagnosed or are just starting to sense that something feels off, in yourself or in your child (or both!) I have expertise in ADHD, autism, anxiety, and the parenting stress that comes with raising a child whose brain works differently than the world expects.
I hold an MSW from Boston College a PhD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where my doctoral research focused on mindfulness, emotion regulation, and parenting stress. I now focus my practice on helping parents identify and clear the emotional programming that keeps them stuck in unhelpful, ineffective parenting patterns.

I ask the questions that don't often get asked that help you slow down and challenge the way you think. We pay attention to what's happening in your body, not just your head, and work on cultivating compassion and acceptance for whatever shows up. With couples, I help you work through the tough conversations to finally hear each other and repair.

Autism Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for autism?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?
Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?
Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
