There are many powerful tools available to help individuals, couples, and families achieve meaningful, positive change in their lives. As a psychologist in clinical practice for over 30 years, I am vitally engaged in the process of integrating a broad range of therapeutic practices to meet the unique needs of each client. Effective psychotherapy can be of great assistance in negotiating the complexities of modern human existence. Engaging mind, heart, and intuition, it is a process that may become an "adventure of the Soul" imparting profound benefit beyond the alleviation of symptoms.

I am a "regular guy" kind of therapist. I don't often wear a tie (I have been known to wear a fedora or other hat and have two corgis with me). I try not to speak in psychobabble. I bring 35 years of experience to the counseling relationship. I strive to empower my clients to make positive changes in their lives. My "ideal" clients are those individuals who want to work from a strengths-based perspective to improve their quality of life. I don't like to see people stuck in a "sick" or "victim" role because that is the narrative given to them. Let's work together to write your own story, one with the happiest ending yet to come!

I use an informal, down-to-earth approach so clients can feel comfortable working collaboratively to "name the elephant" in their life, drill down to the core of issues and discover how patterns from the past repeat in the present. I am passionate about challenging stuck points, old habits and outdated beliefs with care, compassion and respect. I am never afraid to bring humor into a session when appropriate as I value the healing properties of laughter.

At times, we all get stuck. Sometimes we worry, sometimes we don't see a way out, and sometimes we feel distant from or in conflict with the ones we love. There is a way through this, but it isn't always obvious. I can help. As a therapist, my job is to help you move beyond these difficult experiences and to re-engage with your most cherished aspirations, values and hopes.

First of all, I view all my clients' presenting issues as unhealthy yet normal adjustments to life problems. These adjustments have become problematic and created symptoms in the individual and in relationships. My goal is threefold: "stop the bleeding," seek healthier adjustments and, ultimately, to build a quality life of contentment and satisfaction. My orientation is existential and cognitive behavioral, with a specialty in clinical hypnosis and its many valuable applications.

Is your life turning out the way you planned? Are your personal relationships fulfilling? Are you finding the right job for you? Do people get who you really are? Too often we lose track of the way we exist each day. Depression over past mistakes or anxiety about what might happen in the future prevent us from being who we want to be in the present. The goal of existential counseling is to help you develop a better relationship with your "self" first, and then to improve your relationships with others. To help you gain more confidence in the decisions you make daily and to worry less about how others will judge you in the future.

Hi, I’m Kirk and I know you’re here because you are invested in your own change. You may be facing a transition or change in circumstances which asks you to think differently about yourself and others. Personal transitions often bring about uncertainty or confusion about how to proceed, and may occur at any point in the life cycle: leaving home for the first time, addressing your identity, changing careers, relationship conflicts, navigating the shoals of mid-life, or entering retirement. Your unique situation will direct your needs and goals, and I can provide deep listening, thoughtful questioning, empathy, and humor to our work.

Adult lives are limited by our dysfunctional patterns of thinking and behavior. They’re caused by our unhealed childhood hurts. Healing old hurts dissolves many dysfunctional patterns of behavior. Crying is our natural, healing response to any hurt. In many childhoods, our adult care givers were uncomfortable with our crying (healing) and stopped the crying (healing) in any way they could. Or care givers were unsafe, absent, and emotionally neglectful. Key: Crying is not the hurting. The hurt already happened. Key: Crying is actually the healing. My therapy reduces dysfunctional patterned behavior and improves clients’ lives.

My ideal client is someone curious about their inner world, even if ambivalent about change. They may struggle with anxiety, depression, or repeating life patterns, and need both practical coping skills and insight into the beliefs that keep them stuck. Their goals often include breaking cycles, improving relationships, and building confidence in making intentional choices.Motivation helps, but I also value clients willing to be challenged when resistance arises.Homework and practice are essential, extending progress beyond sessions. Together we examine problematic patterns and explore the shadow, aiming for authentic, lasting change

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
