It's a new year but the those old issues never get resolved or go away. Personal issues can be a challenge even if we consider it a new year or season. If you're having issues with past experiences, trauma or some other life issue, my practice could potentially help. I provide services in an up front and honest manner. My approach is to have active dialogue, not just sitting, typing, and waiting for something to happen. This means focusing on a growth mindset, a willingness to heal/change, being realistic, and genuine engagement in therapy. Learning to be responsible for yourself is part of change.

Not accepting new clients. I have been a therapist in Maine for over 30 years, initially at the Master's level; I completed my PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2012. I work with people from all walks of life - people of diverse ethnicities, orientations, & beliefs. I have worked at in- and out-patient programs, & in private practice; with people who are having difficulty adjusting to changing life circumstances, & with people with severe & persistent mental illness. This has confirmed my belief that, while our differences should be celebrated, human beings can always find connection, & those connections can be the basis for healing.

Only taking new clients for women’s group. I work with people who have trouble with relationships, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, rage fits, addiction/alcohol, have gone through trauma, racing thoughts and/or grew up in unhealthy homes. People who at times wish they could escape life and need support to remember how to smile, or sometimes learn how to smile (for real) for the first time. If someone uses legal and/or illegal substances and wants to quit or not, I support your decision. If you want to ease your anxiety, anger, trauma and/or sadness and want to feel happy, I believe you deserve that! :)

My ideal client is someone curious about their inner world, even if ambivalent about change. They may struggle with anxiety, depression, or repeating life patterns, and need both practical coping skills and insight into the beliefs that keep them stuck. Their goals often include breaking cycles, improving relationships, and building confidence in making intentional choices.Motivation helps, but I also value clients willing to be challenged when resistance arises.Homework and practice are essential, extending progress beyond sessions. Together we examine problematic patterns and explore the shadow, aiming for authentic, lasting change

I work with OCD, PTSD, complex trauma, and psychosis using person centered, trauma informed approaches that look at what happened rather than what is wrong with you. I believe that, even with neurologically based disorders, the things that happen to us in our lives are what shape our mental health and that no diagnosis can be broken down with a formula. With that in mind, I work with all my patients with the understanding that we need to work out the past before we can truly change the present.

Life can leave us feeling overwhelmed and stuck — running on empty from anxiety, stress, trauma, ADHD or depression, or worn down by relationship/attachment patterns, dating fatigue, codependency, people-pleasing/fawning, perfectionism, or burnout. Maybe you're a highly sensitive person navigating loneliness, a breakup, a career shift, or a narcissistic parent or partner — or simply feel disconnected from yourself. I help people build healthy boundaries, quiet the inner critic, and rediscover their voice. Working through the challenges you're experiencing, I can help you feel like yourself again, and find meaning and joy in life.

Are you tired of feeling trapped? Do you feel like you don’t fit in anywhere—including therapy? Welcome; I'm a therapist who doesn’t fit in here either. I don’t believe in offering "coping skills" for triggers, I believe in eliminating your need to be triggered in the first place. And I believe that what you think your problems are, are likely not your actual problems.

As a licensed therapist I specialize in both mental health therapy as well as substance abuse and affected other counseling. Although I am able to provide either form of treatment alone, it is often appropriate to combine the two as a treatment for those experiencing difficulties due to the co-occurrence of symptoms, whether they have the substance abuse issue themselves or are affected by a loved one's substance abuse.

Thank you for your interest in my therapy/counseling practice. It is often a very difficult decision to finally decide to go to therapy. What can be even more daunting is to find a therapist that is a good fit for you. My approach is easy going and interactive which I have found most clients appreciate. I specialize in working with adults, couples and families. I am able to accept most insurances for individual therapy. I do enjoy working with couples and feel I can bring in my clinical expertise and life experiences into these sessions. I do not accept insurance for couples sessions. My fee is $150 for a couples session.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?
In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?
The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?
An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?
It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?
HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?
A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?
Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?
Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?
Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy. Learn more about Insurance Coverage and Finding Affordable Therapy
