My therapeutic style is primarily psychodynamic .
Are you noticing your life has become difficult to cope with? Are you struggling with anxiety, depression or feeling overwhelmed? When life becomes too busy we can begin to feel depleted and stress begins to build, leading to symptoms that can be disruptive to our lives. If you are experiencing poor sleep, general increase in frustration, low mood and maybe even a decline in health, it may be in response to a persistent level of daily stress. I work with people in a safe, non-judgmental capacity. I provide support from a holistic perspective considering the entirety of your experience to assist you in restoring a sense of wellbeing.

My work is informed by contemporary psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral schools of thought.
Clients have described me as 'very professional but also friendly, laid back and not intimidating.' I work very collaboratively with clients to set goals and find strategies which will be most helpful to them. Some clients prefer to focus more on addressing painful symptoms and circumstances (depression, anxiety, relationships or work difficulties) while others may want to focus more on personal growth. I am more than happy to help clients with either area or both simultaneously, as they often go hand in hand and serve to increase happiness and satisfaction in daily life.

I have 25 years of experience providing psychological services to adults in the greater Portland area. Originally trained in psychodynamic and humanistic models of therapy, I have subsequently received training in Gestalt therapy and more recently in mindfulness based cognitive models. Within the context of the therapeutic relationship, we will focus on developing awareness of behavioral patterns, beliefs, and emotions which contribute to difficulties in daily living. With developing awareness, you can begin to implement changes consistent with your values and goals

My primary orientation is psychodynamic drawing on relational and attachment based theoretical models.
You may want things to change in your life but don't know where to begin. Perhaps you struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, or just a pervasive sense of feeling stuck--going through the motions of living. Where did this begin? How do you put the pieces together to move forward? I believe an inner exploration of your feelings will provide a path to calming the confusion and fear. Possibilities will be opened up and you will have choices. I believe these changes occur within the therapeutic relationship.

Hi there! My therapeutic approach is all about you. My goal is to make therapy a warm and safe space to help you make the changes you wish to make. I am flexible and will use different types of therapy depending on your needs and preferences. I often use a blend of client-centered, cognitive-behavioral/ACT, and psychodynamic therapies. I also often conceptualize using family systems theory. We will decide at the beginning of our work what will feel like the best fit for you.

I want you to feel empowered, hopeful, and proud of exactly who you are. As we grow, we all experience transitions and challenges that can shake our core beliefs about ourselves, our relationships, and our sense of belonging and purpose in this world. I have worked with children and caregivers to address the cause and effects of trauma, mental health issues, and substance use disorders on individual and family functioning. I am passionate about helping people work through difficult times or process past experiences to rebuild their sense of self worth, develop healthy coping skills, and confidently move into the future.

We are all seeking relief from something. Or have certain roadblocks we continually coming up against that seemingly won’t budge. Needing extra support is nothing to be ashamed of-reaching out for it is a sign of strength and courage. I believe every individual possesses innate strengths and I work with clients to identify and build upon these as the foundation for healthy change and personal growth. Often what we view as our weaknesses can also become strengths, they just need to be in balance. Through self-examination and hard work we have the capacity to grow and surpass our current problems and limitations.

Welcome! You may be here because you’re looking for a new therapist, or maybe are just curious about whether counseling is right for you. Sometimes, people start therapy knowing exactly what they want to address, such as intense feelings of sadness, grief, anxiety, troubling substance use or high levels of stress. Other times, the problem doesn’t have a clear name. It’s possible you feel stuck, or that something’s not quite right, but have trouble putting it into words. Whether you know what you want to achieve in therapy or are unsure if it's even right for you, you’re starting in the right place.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
