You hold everything together for everyone—until one small, unexpected moment unravels it all. The mental load becomes too much, and you feel like you’re losing your grip. You don’t need to be stronger or better; you need a nervous system that feels safe. I help clients build practical skills to manage anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, and major life transitions, while strengthening emotional regulation and relationships. With these skills, you will begin feeling safe in your own body, not constantly braced for the next thing to go wrong. Triggers still happen, but they don’t take you out all day – you can return to center faster.

I view therapy as a collaborative process between myself and the individuals, couples, and families I work with. You have the unique knowledge of your life story and I have the training and experience of supporting people to resolve problems that have become too difficult to overcome in their lives. We use our knowledge and skills together to identify solutions that are right for you. When we combine your knowledge of your unique life circumstances with my experience in resolving a lot of similar problems like yours over 19 years of supporting people like you, we resolve issues far more quickly and effectively.

No Insurance for Couples Welcome to my practice. I have worked with couples, families, and individuals for 25 years helping to heal from trauma, affairs, and early life experiences that get in the way of having warm loving relationships and individual joy. It can be challenging to take the first step to move toward a better and more fulfilling life. Often we fear judgement. I can help you develop an understanding of the issues that are keeping you from living the best life possible. I will work with you to identify the underlying barriers and develop problem solving skills and strategies to cope with issues outside of your control.

I focus on working primarily with couples and individual adults who are dealing with trauma histories, identity/cultural issues, depression and/or anxiety. I can help you excavate your past trauma, your attachment and communication styles in a way that helps you understand them, and how these may be impacting what is going on with you in the present moment, so you can feel more in control of your body, your emotions, your thoughts, and your relationships. I have very limited space for teens also dealing with trauma, anxiety and depression, who can come for in-person services, at my Portsmouth, NH location.

My name is Dr. Arlene Brewster, and my life's work is helping people like you find their way back to their core strength. I’m a Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapist with over 30 years of experience. I believe that you aren’t broken and don’t need to be fixed. My role is to provide a safe space where we can understand the parts of you that are struggling and gently guide you toward healing. I practice IFS therapy because it doesn’t work from the premise that you have symptoms of sickness. It believes that we all have protective parts that try to cope with challenging and painful situations from our past.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
