Have you ever wondered which experiences in your life most affect how you feel, relate, and react? If the word "relationships" comes to mind, then we should talk. My specializations and work have centered around relationships- your partners, your children, family, and perhaps neighbors. I use humor, evidence-based practices and solution-focused approaches to tailor our time together to unravel relational mysteries. Whether through individual, couples, or family counseling, I can help you adapt to life changes, identify the role of relational wounds and increase understanding of the relationships in our lives.

In long term committed relationships we all long to feel seen and known. Couples in distress often say they are having a “communication” problem but it’s actually a “connection” problem. That’s because the normal rhythm in relationships from infancy on involves rupture & repair. Couples in distress typically struggle with too much rupture/disconnection and too little or no repair. The result is either chronic unproductive conflict or distance & isolation. It's from this place that people turn away from each other and engage in addictions & affairs, making it more challenging, but not impossible, to rediscover intimacy & connection.

Big picture, I see my work as helping us live freer, wiser, and more joyful lives. By expanding our awareness and capabilities, we become able to handle whatever life throws at us, whether that's relationship conflict, career questioning, mental or physical health diagnoses, or a longing for more connection and purpose. I help people get free of fear, old stories, and inherited burdens that block access to the wise Self we all have. As a result of our work together, I want you to feel lighter, easier, and more confident in moving through your days.

Your sleep has become irregular. You are eating too many cookies or you don't feel like eating. It is hard to get up in the morning. The energy you once had has become a memory. Your friends seem to be doing much better than you are, so you can't confide in them about how you feel. You worry about your spouse, about your children, about the economy, or about your job. You wonder if you are drinking too many lattes or glasses of wine. It is hard to concentrate, to get just one thing done. And you don't know why you have these thoughts, these worries, these sleepless nights.

Hi, I’m Melissa (she/they). I specialize in ADHD, anxiety, and/or grief. I especially love working with adults, young adults and queer folks. My approach is grounded in curiosity and care for your whole self. If you’re feeling big emotions, overwhelmed by life’s demands, or feeling down about never quite “keeping up” or “getting it together,” I may be the therapist for you. Together, we’ll explore what needs attention, nurturing, or change, and discover how to work with your unique and wonderful brain, not against it. You don’t have to navigate this alone—you were never meant to.

A counselor does need to understand your past, but we will work on what is achievable in the future. After a short exploration of your history, we will work to find reachable goals and pursue those each session. We will work toward resolution and self-sufficiency. I also have a counseling intern who can see clients for $20 per session until December 12th.

I help those searching for growth and transformation who experience depression, stress, anxiety, mood shifts, or the effects of trauma, as well as those who feel stuck in cycles of shame, self-doubt, or self-sabotage. Many are drawn to therapy not only to heal their pain, but also to rediscover creativity, explore who they are, and emerge into a deeper relationship with life. Therapy can be a process of reconnection and a reclaiming of personal power. Together we can build self-compassion, decrease suffering, and untangle old patterns. We can learn to experience more aliveness, joy, and love for ourselves and others.

Everyone needs support at some time during their lives and trying to find the right match in a counselor can be a daunting task. Whether you are someone who is ready to address past experiences that continue to impact you; a college student trying to navigate the pressures of school, changing relationships, and responsibilities; a parent trying to do everything for everyone else and feeling like it is impossible; someone adjusting to one of life's major transitions; or maybe you just feel overwhelmed with life in general right now, I would be honored to help.

Even the most productive of us struggle internally with feelings of anxiety and doubt, loneliness and despair. Our minds need healing. Our relationships could use attention and repair. Our role on this planet isn't to live without struggle, but through it, flawed and fierce, loving and humble. My role is to help individuals do this work: to live more deeply into their lives, through both the pain and their joy.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
