Anxiety Therapists in Sanford, ME
My focus is helping people learn to reparent their inner child and step into self leadership to address family of origin issues, developmental trauma, attachment disruptions, anxiety, life transitions, relationship challenges, and self-esteem.
I bring a parts based, neurological approach to therapy; the more a person knows about how their brains and bodies work, the better they can grow. I use both talk and body based interventions to help people stop numbing out and avoiding challenging feelings. It is only through learning how to safely stay connected and grounded that we can address challenges.

I specialize in Anxiety and Depression.
For the past 15 years I have been solely focused on children and their families. It is hard when we realize that sometimes we need a little help, and that parenting can be a challenge. When we see our children struggle, it can be heartbreaking. I am here to lend a hand to that struggle and help your child understand what is going on internally, gain the coping skills needed, and strengthen the family bond. Strengths can be found in all of us, even when they are hidden deep. As adults, having someone to talk to without judgement is beneficial. You will always be respected and valued walking through my doors or joining online.

My own experiences with physical disability (I'm a person who stutters), pervasive anxiety, and shifting spirituality sent me on a journey which, every day, teaches me the healing power of being curious toward that which we feel compelled to resist.
If you couldn't already tell, my approach is rooted in curiosity! I help you explore where and who you have been, you are, and you want to be. I treat therapy as a highly collaborative process led by you, and I strive to be a present, gentle, curious, kind, and appropriately humorous guide and supporter.

I also enjoy working with adults that struggle with anxiety, depression, parenting and basic life challenges.
Life is challenging and it just never stays the same! Sometimes we find ourselves in a rough patch where old patterns of behavior just don't work anymore but we don't know what else to do. I believe it's my job to help you find your way through to new answers and behaviors that serve you better. To me, the work of therapy is to find the courage within to change the things that you can, the acceptance to live with what you cannot and most importantly, to figure out which is which! I believe it is my role to help you find your way through this with compassion, humor and insight.

My private practice is centered in taking a 'whole person' approach by supporting a diverse collection of people with their mental health concerns. Being client-centered is important in my practice, through being genuine and using strengths-based interventions. Whether you're working on anxiety, addressing trauma, establishing boundaries, or quieting that inner critic, these approaches give us something practical to work with.
My approach is pretty simple, I show up, listen closely, cut through the noise, and help clients figure out what’s next. I don’t believe in overcomplicating things or sugarcoating what needs to be said, especially when someone’s in a tough spot. I’ve spent most of my career working with adolescents and young adults, who are navigating life stressors, difficulty in relationships, and the many challenges of becoming more independent. I use a mix of CBT and DBT tools to help you notice patterns, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and practice new skills that support the changes you want to make.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
