I have been in practice since 2001, specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the treatment of anxiety and depression. I will work with children over 10, adolescents and adults. I'll work with individuals, couples and families. I believe that therapists are like shoes...some fit and some don't, and sometimes it could be the right shoe for the wrong occasion. I appreciate your interest, and would like to see if our therapeutic relationship is a comfortable fit.

I have 15 years of clinical experience helping people change difficult behavioral and relational patterns. Initially trained in trauma-focused treatment for children and teens, my practice later expanded to include adult clients and couples. I base my work on a blend of therapeutic models that highlight attachment theory, trauma recovery, neurobiology, and psychodynamic theory. I have received specialized training supporting members of families formed through adoption. I have also worked with many families establishing boundaries and balance after conflict, loss, infertility, divorce, and remarriage.

At the Partnership for Trauma Recovery we believe that true healing happens when we find the courage to look at the root of the long standing patterns and difficulties we have. While learning to cope with the daily burdens of these patterns is an important skill, our philosophy is that simply learning to manage only places a bandage on the problem. In order to truly heal we have to look deeper into ourselves and try to determine where these patterns developed.

Many individuals struggle with various difficulties that impact their daily life and their relationships. The difficulties they face often relate to mental health symptoms, underlying personality problems or even medical issues. Theses difficulties can lead to substance abuse, emotional instability or employment problems. Many individuals that struggle with various problems have history of psychiatric and mental health treatment that is often ineffective because frequently they are misdiagnosed. It is critical that an individual is properly diagnosed before any psychiatric interventions are explored.

I recognize there are times we can get focused on regrets of the past. Or we're consumed with the chaos of anticipating the future. We can be overwhelmed by anxiety, sadness, or experiences of loss and grief...sometimes leading to isolation, being "stuck", or unhealthy relationships with substances, behaviors, or people. What drives me as a therapist is when I see a client taking action that makes their mind an ally, rather than a detractor, in their life.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?
The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?
Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?
Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?
ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
