I have had the opportunity to work for 43 years with Individual adults and adolescents, couples, families, and groups. The issues of trauma, loss, life changes, depression and anxiety are so much a part of all of our lives. Levels of stress complicate conversations, disconnect relationships, decrease self care, and interfere with our happiness. Finding balance is what this therapy can offer. Imagine sitting and talking with no judgement, confronting your own past and finding a new present. Working together we will undo old messages which have run your emotions and influenced your behaviors and create new ones you choose to live by.

I work with individuals facing anxiety, trauma, and emotional overwhelm who want deeper healing beyond symptom relief. Many come after talk therapy falls short. Using art and expressive therapies, we help release stored emotions, process experiences, and reconnect with their authentic self.

I use an informal, down-to-earth approach so clients can feel comfortable working collaboratively to "name the elephant" in their life, drill down to the core of issues and discover how patterns from the past repeat in the present. I am passionate about challenging stuck points, old habits and outdated beliefs with care, compassion and respect. I am never afraid to bring humor into a session when appropriate as I value the healing properties of laughter.

I am an Addictions Specialist with with 20+ years of professional experience in both NYC and Maine - in addition to personal experience with addiction and long term recovery.. most important factor when pursuing counseling is to find a "therapeutic alliance" that fits. I always recommend that clients consult with a few providers before choosing. Once a trusting alliance is established, I embark on a journey alongside my clients, which can be brief and solution-focused or longer term weekly sessions and ongoing support.

Maybe you're wondering how things got so out of alignment. Or, as one of my patients once put it, you'd really like to "unfuck your life" but aren't sure if that's even possible. Maybe you're navigating a relationship with substances, or loving someone who is. Or maybe you just have the sense that something fundamental needs to change, and that you're finally ready to take a first step. I work with adults in both short-term treatments and long-term depth therapy, psychoanalytic in orientation, and I'm interested in what's underneath: the patterns, the defenses, and what becomes possible when given the opportunity to develop a self.

You are not alone! I want you to know that. I spent years fumbling in the dark too. I read self help books and went to general therapy. I knew the WHY but not the HOW. - Do you wonder how to heal? - Are you struggling with relationship habits that aren’t serving you? - Does people pleasing and fear of conflict get in the way? Let’s change that up for you! I specialize in working with clients on Divorce, Co-Parenting, and Relationship Coaching (including dating). Half of my practice is working in the Maine legal system as a Guardian Ad Litem or Coparent Mediator. I have supported over 500 clients in their divorce transition.

Everyone's experience with addiction and/or codependency is different, but I promise it works if you work it!
First, I want to acknowledge how difficult it is to decide to make a change in your life when it comes to Substance Use Disorders. My ideal client doesn’t even have to be sure they’re ready to cease use; all I ask is that you come in with an open-mind and open-heart while remaining curious about the possibilities.

I specialize in supporting those working in education, healthcare, social services & helping professions, those who spend their days guiding others through crisis, pain & uncertainty, often while quietly navigating the complexities of their own lives. I understand the unique pressures of being a helper: long shifts, emotional labor, ethical dilemmas & quiet moments of doubt that linger after the workday ends, being a compass for others even when your own sense of direction feels blurred. In helping professions, asking for support can feel risky. There’s a persistent stigma suggesting help is weakness. It's not. It's courageous.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
