It is rarely easy to find a way out of whatever it is that is compromising our ability to be fully present in our own life. We might describe this powerful emotion as anxiety, or depression, a difficult mood we are in more often than not. We may also think of this feeling or mind state as an obstacle we must overcome before we can fully engage with other aspects of our life such as relationships, professional ambitions, creative projects. Perhaps we have a story of ourselves that remains untold, or partially told. A story which is a source of despair because of its untapped potential.

Often the hardships we meet in our external worlds move us to explore our internal selves: how we think, what our feelings mean to us, how we relate to others, and why we make the choices we do. I provide a deeply compassionate, non-judgmental space for clients to explore their relationships with important people in their lives, with the world around them, and with themselves. With you, the client, as the expert of your own experience and with the therapist as a skillful and caring helper, profound self-discovery and healing are possible.

In our modern world, it seems everything is pulling us further and further apart, when what we long for is to feel close to the people who matter. Are you tired of being angry with your partner? Disappointed and feeling alone? Tired of the same old fight that you just can't seem to get out of? Did a recent event cause a breech in trust? A heathy relationship should be our tether to safety, not anther source of distress. It is possible to improve communication, rebuild trust, deepen intimacy, and propel your relationship into happiness, even if it is hard work.

Hello! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California with over 8 years of clinical experience. I typically work with parents in the perinatal period as they navigate their transition into parenthood or re-adjust to life with a new baby, whether it's their first or the fifth! I screen and treat clients for postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and birth trauma. I rely heavily on aspects of CBT, DBT, and the importance of self-regulation. It is important to me that my practice is trauma-informed and culturally sensitive because therapeutic care should be accessible to everyone.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
