I help teens and adults who feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns of taking care of everyone but themselves. Many are dependable and driven, yet still struggle to feel confident or connected to who they are. That struggle can take many forms: a harsh inner critic, old patterns that keep resurfacing, or a quiet sense of disconnection that’s hard to name. Therapy offers a space to slow down and tune into what’s happening beneath the surface. It’s about understanding and caring for the parts of you that often get overlooked so you can feel more grounded, authentic, and at ease within yourself.

I work with children, adolescents, and young adults, with emotional or behavioral difficulties. The issues I see most in my practice are: anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, and family relationship difficulties. I work primarily from a strengths-based, cognitive -behavioral approach, using psycho-education, coping skills training, and positive psychology. With adult clients, I explore the impact their family of origin has had, both helpful and not so helpful, and help them develop healthy habits in response to those issues. Always, I feel the relationship between client and counselor is part of the healing.

Building strong therapeutic relationships while providing a safe space for clients to heal is the foundation of my approach. I motivate clients to recognize their own potential, while remaining empathetic and supportive in helping to facilitate change. Based on the client’s direction, I will help them identify their self-reliance while teaching them how to advocate for themselves. I appreciate the idea of using what will work best for clients as an individuals. Knowing how different we all are, our personalities – our problems – our backgrounds, I create treatment plans that are tailored for my clients.

Life can be overwhelming-leaving little time or energy for peaceful introspection. I use a warm acceptance and humor to help clients face challenging dilemmas. Without understanding the motivation behind our impulses, we can lose our way, sometimes getting stuck for years, and developing maladaptive emotional coping difficulties. I help people recognize and overcome their self-limiting belief systems, generating greater self knowledge, confidence and having the ability to tolerate the emotional strains of contemporary living. I have over 20 years of work experience in the trauma field- working with both survivors and perpetrators of abuse.

There is wisdom in the ways we adapt to our environments, but they do not always serve us in the present moment. My aim is to help people identify their adaptive patterns and view them with compassion, while also learning what to hold and what to let go. As a neurobiological informed therapist, I aim to help people move from judgement, shame and isolation to curiosity, acceptance and connection.

Hi, I’m Melissa (she/they). I specialize in ADHD, anxiety, and/or grief. I especially love working with adults, young adults and queer folks. My approach is grounded in curiosity and care for your whole self. If you’re feeling big emotions, overwhelmed by life’s demands, or feeling down about never quite “keeping up” or “getting it together,” I may be the therapist for you. Together, we’ll explore what needs attention, nurturing, or change, and discover how to work with your unique and wonderful brain, not against it. You don’t have to navigate this alone—you were never meant to.

There are a lot of therapists out there, so I will make an attempt to summarize my beliefs about therapy in three succinct points. First, therapy is not always easy. Second, it is a therapist's job to challenge you. And third, therapeutic rapport is paramount to establishing effective therapy. If this is what you are looking for, I welcome you to schedule an initial appointment.

You help others to create better lives for themselves, but what about you — where do you turn when you need support while caring for others? You may experience compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary trauma in helping professions, and the only way you can continue to show up for your patients is to make space to heal for yourself. You are probably a Type-A personality who puts everyone else's needs above your own. I'm here to tell you it's okay to take time for yourself. I'm here to provide a space to heal from old trauma wounds and workplace stressors that have created difficulty in work/life balance.

Welcome! I work with anxious adults who may be experiencing overwhelm, self-criticism, people-pleasing, or high-functioning depression as they navigate their daily lives. You might care so much about your relationships, career, or other responsibilities that you forget about your own needs, leading you to feel stuck, dissatisfied, or confused about your own identity in your life and relationships. Experiencing life transitions or stress may even bring these symptoms to the surface. Whether these are familiar experiences or you're navigating other challenges, I hope to offer a warm and compassionate space centered around you.

Are you tired of anonymous big-box therapy? Venture capital firms that pair you with random telehealth therapists on the other side of the country who may or may not show up to your video session? Are you looking for a therapist that can meet you either in person or remotely and is focused on learning about you instead of on corporate-driven production numbers? I am one of the many sole proprietor therapists in Maine who are not that big-box model. My goal is to really see and hear the unique human in front of me, utilizing a psychodynamic approach to get to the core of figuring out unhelpful life patterns and moving forward.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
