Therapists in Kennebunk, ME

My goal as a therapist is to empower clients to live more mindfully. I believe that we each have the power to gain insight into our thoughts; increase awareness and connection with our feelings; more effectively manage stress; and make the changes in our lives that are necessary to function more fully in relationships, and work. My role as a therapist is to facilitate this process. I work with clients on issues such as addictions, depression, anxiety, learning difficulties, conflicts within families/couples,and anger management.

Given the many challenges that life can hand us, it's easy to lose hope or feel overwhelmed. You are not alone. All too often our minds begin to take over filling our head with old messages that no longer serve us. Perhaps we are judging ourselves too harshly or feeling guilty for things that are out of our hands. Perhaps our heart is burdened with feelings of depression or anxiety. By exploring the importance of grounding ourselves in the present and practicing an awareness of being mindful, we can change our life patterns finding the inner peace that we strive for. Working together we can find hope in the present moment.

We all possess the ability to transform, whether it be through difficult circumstances, challenging relationships, life transitions, or mental health struggles. I work with clients experiencing life transitions, depression, anxiety, mood, and stress disorders. I also work with people affected by trauma using trauma-informed practices to understand how we process these experiences.

Therapy can provide children and teens a safe and supportive setting to learn to identify and express their emotions, make progress with social integration, growth and development. They have the opportunity to develop skills to more effectively manage their social and emotional challenges that impact their interactions with others. Parents strive to create happiness in the lives of their children. In my practice, they will learn to identify their strengths, become more confident in their ability to work through their emotional challenges, improve their social skills, increase self-awareness and develop a more positive sense of self.

Hello! I'm Dr. G - I believe therapy is transformative. That being said, therapy is not “one size fits all,” and finding what works for you is a critical part of the process. My personal style combines kindness and understanding with humor and honesty. I also believe understanding oneself and finding personal agency in powerless or overwhelming experiences is the unpinning to healing and freedom from suffering. Please reach out if you have any questions about therapy, mental health, or my practice.

It is natural to seek support when we feel overwhelmed, confused, fearful or depressed. The therapeutic process offers us the opportunity to build on skills that we already have in order to find relief, hope and healing. My work combines practices of narrative therapy (examining the beliefs we have about ourselves), cognitive behavioral work (paying attention to our thoughts), expressive therapy (healing through art and writing) and mindfulness exercises.

Building strong therapeutic relationships while providing a safe space for clients to heal is the foundation of my approach. I work with children, adolescents, and young adults, with emotional or behavioral difficulties. The issues I see most in my practice are: anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, and family relationship difficulties. I work primarily from a strengths-based, cognitive -behavioral approach, using psycho-education, coping skills training, and positive psychology. With adult clients, I explore the impact their family of origin has had -- good and bad---and help them develop healthy habits in response to those issues. Always, I feel the relationship between client and counselor is part of the healing.

Did you ever watch Boy Meets World growing up? If yes, skip the next two sentences. If no, then let me set the scene. A 90’s sitcom about the wholesome, suburban Philadelphia Matthews family, who have two teenage sons. The older brother, Eric, bonks his younger brother, Cory, in the forehead and says “Life’s tough, get a helmet.” While I don’t condone violence, I do agree that life can be tough sometimes. While wearing a helmet is beneficial in a lot of scenarios (i.e. riding a bike), it is not so beneficial in the emotional, social, psychological, or theoretical realms.

Pain may be an inevitable part of life, but we know there's life beyond it. So, how do we heal? How do we find meaning and joy? How can we see ourselves and the world clearly? As your therapist, I will bring warmth, compassion, humor, and deep listening to exploring your life stories. Personally, I’ve reckoned with job and relationship changes, parenting, health issues, financial challenges, spiritual questions, grief, and many other human experiences. Having lived overseas, I enjoy working with people of varied identities and backgrounds whose common thread is motivation for change.
