I believe that people do the best they can in any given moment. Therapy can be a useful way of learning new skills, identifying maladaptive patterns and recognizing inherent strengths. Sometimes current life circumstances, past trauma or relational difficulties can leave us feeling confused or stuck. Having a safe, objective place to sort this out can be a healthy way to move forward. I love helping people find renewed energy, balance and peace.

Intelligent. Holistic. CBT and The Work are the foundation of my practice. Intelligent because they are evidence based and universal. Holistic because they incorporate the western medical model and the eastern spiritual model of health. You will begin to understand your own mind, your own unconscious habits, and a way out of confusion. You will see what is causing your suffering and how to heal. I offer walking-and-talking sessions outside in Hope Woods, sessions in the office, or Telehealth.

While the avenues of our lives seem very predictable, all too often that predictability falls to the way side. We summon the resources we know from our past. A feeling of being off balance, overwhelmed, misunderstood and at times alone can pressure our basic instincts. I am grateful to the individual who chooses to explore with me the answers they may already hold. The process of bringing concerns to the room and taking the time to look, study and explore individual needs and strengths begins the journey to self acceptance.

Therapy can provide children a safe and supportive way to learn to identify and express their experiences and feelings; and make progress with social integration, growth, and development. They can develop skills to understand and work through psychosocial challenges. They have the opportunity to gain self-awareness and experience social and emotional success. Creating happiness is what parents strive for when raising children. In my practice, children will learn to identify their strengths, and become more skilled and confident in working through emotional stressors and skill deficits.

I work with children, adolescents, and young adults, with emotional or behavioral difficulties. The issues I see most in my practice are: anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, and family relationship difficulties. I work primarily from a strengths-based, cognitive -behavioral approach, using psycho-education, coping skills training, and positive psychology. With adult clients, I explore the impact their family of origin has had -- good and bad---and help them develop healthy habits in response to those issues. Always, I feel the relationship between client and counselor is part of the healing. Currently I am taking only self pay

I believe that relationships have the ability to serve as containers for significant personal growth as well as relational healing. I am particularly passionate about working with couples and families to break long-standing patterns of conflict or navigate recent ruptures in order to arrive at a truer sense of love and connection. I also work from a trauma-informed perspective with individuals who are facing life transitions, struggling with relationship challenges, or just feeling like something from the past is getting in the way of present-day functioning.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
