EMDR Therapists in Hallowell, ME
EMDR is not a talk therapy.
Are past traumas impacting your life? Do you say or do things that you later regret? Do you struggle with identifying and communicating your feelings? Do you have intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or recurring distressing dreams? Do you drink alcohol or use other substances or gamble or do other self-destructive behaviors that cause self-harm or disrupt your life? Are you a people pleaser? Do you struggle with setting boundaries? Anything that keeps you from living a full life is either built on a lie or a self-defeating memory; what is limiting you? What is keeping you from having the life you want?

In addition to CBT and DBT, I like to use Narrative, IFS, Psychodynamic or EMDR approaches because I think these types give individuals permission to develop a better relationship with themself.
As a therapist my goal is to help people attune to their own set of needs, restore a healthy relationship with themself, and find a way to navigate the world authentically with grace and purpose. My approach is collaborative and begins with a thorough assessment, after which, we work together to develop a treatment plan. My goal is for clients to know what they are working on before the session, feel a sense of accomplishment throughout the session, and ultimately leave the session feeling proud. Assessments and treatment plans help clients develop a common language and also approach session time with a high level of intention.

I use EMDR, parts-work-informed approaches, and mindfulness activities during sessions.
You say the right things in the meeting, you show up for the people you love, and still, the moment you're alone, the voice starts. You should have said it differently. Why do you always do that? What's wrong with you?
For many people, that inner critic didn't appear out of nowhere. It has roots. Past experiences of loss, neglect, emotional wounds, or moments where you weren't protected the way you deserved to be can quietly shape the story you tell yourself about who you are. Trauma doesn't always look like a single dramatic event. Sometimes it's the accumulation of a thousand small moments that taught you it wasn't safe.

I am an EMDR trained therapist who works with clients on a variety of issues including trauma, anxiety, Autism, ADHD, attachment, depression and all manner of life transitions.
We each have an authentic self, and things we know to be deeply true about our hearts, minds, identities and lives. I believe that no matter how confused we may feel, we can all find our way back to what is unique, creative and courageous in ourselves. These are wild times. There is nothing maladjusted about feeling anxious or depressed in a world that does not feel equitable or safe. My goal is not to help you adjust to broken things; it is to build upon the strengths of your identity, your values and your truth, and to hold space for all of the parts of you that need to be heard and seen.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
