When we experience trauma, it can lead to overwhelming emotions, physical sensations, and vivid memories. I help clients identify the patterns their bodies and minds develop as a result of these past experiences. By recognizing these patterns, we can work together to encourage positive change. Using a trauma-informed approach and with support from my equine co-therapist, we assist you in reconnecting with your body and understanding how trauma affects your nervous system. Together, we will explore how trauma manifests in your life, reprocess those experiences, and address any challenging emotions. I work with folks ages 9 and up!

On paper, your life makes sense—inside, it's more complicated. You feel anxious, unsettled, or quietly unhappy. You find yourself wondering, “Why am I unhappy when everything looks okay?” or “Why do I feel anxious when nothing is technically wrong?” Perhaps life has shifted through parenting, relationships, or other transitions, leaving you asking, “Who am I now?” You’re not looking for a quick fix, but a long-term therapeutic relationship to help you understand yourself more deeply and keep showing up as life continues to change. My work is with teens and adults who want depth, reflection, and a consistent therapeutic relationship.

My work integrates attachment-based, psychodynamic, and narrative therapies.
Anyone else an over-thinker who feels lost or burnt out? Have you read the books, tried the tools, and still feel stuck? I work with adults who feel overwhelmed, emotionally, exhausted, or disconnected from themselves after years of coping through responsibility, self-reliance, or chronic stress. Many are navigating anxiety, grief, relationship patterns, or major life transitions and want a space to slow down, reflect, gain clarity, and move forward with a great self-understanding so change feels more sustainable and aligned.

There are few investments greater than the one you make in yourself or your relationships. You may feel stuck in painful patterns and unsure how to move forward. Conflict, disconnection, anxiety, burnout, grief, or shame may be weighing on you. You feel motivated to break old habits, increase clarity, find relief, and access deeper emotional connection. While we may begin with something specific bringing you to therapy, I don’t approach therapy as a quick fix. I believe meaningful change comes from slowing down, understanding your experiences, and creating a safe space for new ways of being.

Drawing from psychodynamic and attachment-based perspectives, Polyvagal Theory, and other integrative approaches, I consider the whole person and the ways our experiences shape how we relate to ourselves and the world around us.
My name is Maddie Cilano, LCPC. I am a clinical counselor and founder of Reclaiming Peace, a nonprofit grounded in the belief that each person is inherently whole and holds an innate capacity for healing, growth, and change. This belief is also at the heart of my work as a therapist. Rather than viewing therapy as a process of fixing what is broken, I see it as an opportunity to better understand ourselves, reconnect with our inner strengths, and reclaim the self-trust and agency that difficult experiences can make harder to access.

100% Online telehealth. Are you longing for clarity and ease? Most of our psychological pain and suffering, our inhibitions and limitations in achieving a satisfying life, are the result of primitive anxieties that we have carried within ourselves since the very time we were, indeed, really helpless. Through our work together, you'll learn the tools to understand the meaning underneath your emotions and move beyond feeling stuck and overwhelmed. Using both talk therapy and somatic (body-based) tools, our time together will be a place for you to heal, grow, and explore your inner world in a compassionate and non-judgmental space.

You may be someone who appears to be doing well—capable, thoughtful, and accustomed to managing what life asks of you. Yet underneath, you may struggle with anxiety, depression, self-doubt, or relationship patterns that are difficult to change. Sometimes there was no obvious trauma, but early relationships still left lasting beliefs about who you are, what you can expect from others, or what you must do to be loved. Therapy can help you understand where these patterns came from, loosen their hold, and develop a healthier, more authentic relationship with yourself

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
