Trauma Focused Therapists in Gorham, ME
Hi, I’m Kirk and I know you’re here because you are invested in your own change. You may be facing a transition or change in circumstances which asks you to think differently about yourself and others. Personal transitions often bring about uncertainty or confusion about how to proceed, and may occur at any point in the life cycle: leaving home for the first time, addressing your identity, changing careers, relationship conflicts, navigating the shoals of mid-life, or entering retirement. Your unique situation will direct your needs and goals, and I can provide deep listening, thoughtful questioning, empathy, and humor to our work.

I am passionate about providing a safe space for those seeking a non-judgmental environment to heal and grow. My practice is strengths based and I use a variety of evidence-based modalities to help people help themselves. What’s most important in therapy in my opinion, is that the client is the expert of themselves. I do not accept insurance and unless you have a referral or are court ordered, my client load is full at this time. E-mail is the best way to reach me.

In therapy, I see myself as a guide helping people re-connect and remember the wisdom of their own inner knowing so they can meet life as their most vibrant self. I take a non pathologizing approach to care, and incorporate methods that support clients getting to the root of their suffering, coming into more wholeness as they heal and release trauma, grief and other blocks to joy, presence, and connection. I am deeply committed to my own healing process and do the work that I ask my clients to show up for. This - combined with 20+ years of clinical experience allows me to co-create meaningful transformation with my clients.

My ideal clients are thoughtful, high-functioning adults who appear capable on the outside but feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected within. They may struggle with anxiety, relationship patterns, life transitions, self-worth, or spiritual questions. Some want faith integrated into their care, while others are questioning or rebuilding beliefs. They are ready to understand themselves more deeply, break repeating patterns, and move toward a steadier, more meaningful way of living.

Starting therapy can feel awkward. You might know something needs to change but have no idea where to begin or you may understand exactly why you feel the way you do and still feel stuck. You don’t need to arrive with the right words or a perfectly organized story. We can figure it out together. I’m a relational therapist, which means I believe the connection between us matters. I want therapy to feel like a space where you can exhale, take down the armor, and be fully yourself. I’ll bring compassion, curiosity, honesty, humor, and the occasional curse word. I won’t reduce you to a diagnosis because you are so much more.

Limited openings for Fall! Do you feel like you keep having the same fight with your partner and never reach a resolution? Do you long for a deeper connection but aren’t sure how to cultivate one? Maybe trust has been broken or you're navigating a major life change. You might still love your partner, but feel uncertain about the future of your relationship. Or maybe you’re coming to therapy on your own, hoping to better understand your relationship patterns, process a breakup, or make empowered decisions about love and connection.

There is wisdom in the ways we adapt to our environments, but they do not always serve us in the present moment. My aim is to help people identify their adaptive patterns and view them with compassion, while also learning what to hold and what to let go. As a neurobiological informed therapist, I aim to help people move from judgement, shame and isolation to curiosity, acceptance and connection.

Finding the right therapeutic fit can feel overwhelming, and making the decision to face painful experiences is often even harder. You do not have to navigate grief, trauma, or life’s challenges alone. Trauma can impact both the mind and body in ways we may not fully recognize. I value the mind-body connection and often incorporate somatic approaches into my work to help clients feel more deeply into their experience with their emotions. If you’re grieving, feeling stuck, disconnected, overwhelmed, or struggling to find meaning, I’d love to connect and see if we may be a good fit.

I see you scrolling, checking out all these profiles. Bit overwhelming huh? How do you choose? Who is right? Will they judge you? The cool thing is that it's so trendy to have a therapist; weren't you aware? That's why it's so hard to find one these days! But, it is still kind of scary to take the plunge. That's not how it's supposed to be you know; when you enter my office, my one and only goal is to help you feel accepted just how you are, no matter what you're bringing through the door. Kids making you crazy? Partner on your last nerve? Memories or old trauma preventing your from feeling like you can move forward? I can help.

Welcome. I am happy that you are considering yourself and thinking about your needs. Despite challenges, I do believe that the first goal has already been met in that you are seeking support. This, I realize, is not always easy. I assure you progress starts here, in this step, and in your consideration to yourself. It would be my pleasure and privilege to support you.

Addiction can lead us down a path we thought we would never walk. Sometimes we get lost and need gentle guidance to find our way back to live the life we were meant to live. Like the caterpillar that transforms into a butterfly You too can “ Emerge a New You!.” Addiction can take many forms besides drugs & alcohol, cigarettes & gambling. Sometimes what seems to be an addiction is a habit that needs to be broken. Together we can determine the difference & explore solutions. Additional examples: eating disorders, work, shopping, shoplifting, self mutilation, risky behaviors, video games, relationships, etc. You are NOT alone.

Most of my professional life I have been in private practice in New Hampshire and have recently made the move to Maine to be nearer family. My experience spans all ages in a variety of settings. I have worked with first responders and both active duty service personnel and veterans. Some clients want to know more about the person they are seeing and I am happy to discuss my background and credentials. Others want to immediately focus on the issues they are concerned about and I am prepared to start where ever the client wishes. Please call if you have questions about whether I can help with your particular situation. I believe in giving back to my community and therefore have volunteered for the American Red Cross for over 25 years.
