EMDR, IFS, Somatic, and Sensory-Motor Art therapies represent the forefront in the movement beyond talk therapy and towards working with the nervous system to deeply integrate positive change.
We often find ourselves stuck in all too familiar negative patterns. Patterns of behavior that we know don't serve ourselves or our loved ones. Patterns of thought that always seem to tear us down no matter how much progress we make. Patterns within relationships that are less than we deserve. Patterns of anxiety and stress that feel out of our control. Many of us have worked hard to understand and change these patterns: setting goals, self-help books, therapy, medication, meditation, and so on. Yet we find that the deepest patterns are frustratingly stubborn, seeming to rise to the surface no matter how much work we've done.

I have taught art both in private practice, college and in public schools.
At times, we all need a little extra encouragement to dive into the aspects of our lives that are causing stress. Those feelings can sometimes spiral into anxiety, depression, mood swings, substance use, compulsive behaviors, and even anger. When these emotional or behavioral challenges become pronounced, they can certainly affect our relationships, education, finances, or how we navigate day-to-day life. In session, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your past, present, and future experiences—these are the keys that shape your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions which maybe get in the way of leading a fulfilling life.

Greetings! I bring over a decade of clinical experience to our sessions as well as certifications in yoga teacher training and reiki. I’m trained in EMDR, TF-CBT, and positive parenting—which I’ve found to be immensely helpful for many individuals in processing trauma, anxiety-based blockages, and generational trauma. I have additional expertise in treating PTSD, couples, body positivity, relationship stressors, healing from abuse, OCD, and personality disorders. I also care deeply about systemic oppression and advocacy, the spiritual elements of healing, and maximizing the mind-body connection with somatic practices.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
