I use a person centered approach to work on major mental health issues to build a sense of hope and empowerment. Dealing with major mental health issues can be daunting and isolating, and it can often feel like there is nowhere to turn for help. I am passionate about treating people with psychosis, OCD, and mood disorders (including bipolar disorder without psychosis) and helping people figure out what life looks like with a life long diagnosis. Empathy, respect, and lightheartedness are at the core of what I do and I believe they are the foundation of a healing relationship.

Getting stuck is easy. Getting unstuck doesn’t have to be as lonely and painful as it sometimes feels and sometimes is. My path to this career hasn't been linear, and I'm no stranger to feeling stuck at times. Feeling & getting stuck is part of being human. I’m starting out with this to let you know that as a therapist, I won’t be parroting jargon, telling you how to live your best life or telling you what you should do. I’ll listen, then listen some more, then keep listening for patterns. We’ll work together to harness your capacity for change, your ability to get unstuck, and when needed, find other resources and supports.

There are as many different kinds of struggles as there are people. That said, counseling can be a place to sort out confusion, find fresh perspectives, and re-energize yourself to tackle the ups and downs of your life and feel good about your actions. It's something we all can benefit from at different points in our lives. I work with teenagers, adults, and elders. My work includes couples counseling and individual counseling, as well as work focused on employment issues and men's issues.

Updated for April: I have openings for Mainecare and Cash Pay clients! I respond to all outreaches! I often work with people who are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck—those who want to better understand themselves and improve their relationships. Much of my work is with adults who grew up in rigid or emotionally restrictive environments, including religious settings, as well as men who feel disconnected from their emotions or relationships and want to understand themselves more deeply. I take a relational, emotionally focused approach to explore how past experiences and relationships may be shaping present-day patterns.

Most of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and used to managing on their own. From the outside, they often appear to be doing fine. Inside, they may feel stuck in painful relationship patterns, quietly self-critical, overwhelmed, or disconnected from their emotions. Therapy with me is grounded in a genuine, collaborative relationship. I believe meaningful change happens when you feel understood, supported, and respected, rather than judged, rushed, or “fixed.” Together, we slow things down and make sense of emotional patterns that developed for good reasons but may no longer be serving you.

First of all, I view all my clients' presenting issues as unhealthy yet normal adjustments to life problems. These adjustments have become problematic and created symptoms in the individual and in relationships. My goal is threefold: "stop the bleeding," seek healthier adjustments and, ultimately, to build a quality life of contentment and satisfaction. My orientation is existential and cognitive behavioral, with a specialty in clinical hypnosis and its many valuable applications.

At times, we all get stuck. Sometimes we worry, sometimes we don't see a way out, and sometimes we feel distant from or in conflict with the ones we love. There is a way through this, but it isn't always obvious. I can help. As a therapist, my job is to help you move beyond these difficult experiences and to re-engage with your most cherished aspirations, values and hopes.

Generally, it is discomfort that brings us into therapy. Discomfort (anxiety, depression, stress) is borne of an almost limitless array of life circumstances: challenging relationships, problematic perceptions of self, coping with life/work stressors, and the uncertainties we are all facing in today’s world. This universal condition of discomfort, as one famous therapist said; finds us “in the soup together.” As a consequence of our shared humanity, it is in relationship that we humans most commonly find the opportunity for deepened self-understanding and abiding change.

I enjoy working with a wide variety of adults in individual and group therapy to address diverse issues across their lifespan. I approach therapy primarily from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) perspective. This approach works to increase a person’s ability to be present in the moment, open up to various life experiences and let go of old ones, and take actions guided by their core values. However, I draw upon and integrate other approaches as needed based on my clients’ specific needs, desires, and identities. I am currently completing my residency year at Psychology Specialists of Maine.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
