I understand that life can be messy. Every day we struggle with the stress of work, family, financial pressures, personal doubts and fears of failure. Anxiety, depression and trauma can often times make even the simplest of tasks seem overwhelming. I understand that talking to someone unbiased and uninvolved can help to make sense of these experiences and give you a place to sort through these emotions in a private and confidential setting.

We all face challenges, but you don't have to face them alone. Life has many ups and downs. There are times when we feel like every thing is falling into place and times it seems to be falling apart. Life can feel overwhelming when you are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief or trauma that has impacted every part of us. It can affect all parts of daily functioning. Therapy can help reduce such symptoms, build resiliency and create a sense of peace and understanding about your experiences.

I recognize that clients are their own best experts; however, life circumstances sometimes intervene and clients need facilitation to become their best selves. I believe that clients, particularly clients who experience insomnia, anxiety, depression, and trauma, occasionally need assistance with life's trials and travails. A compassionate listener and an experienced clinician is often what clients need to help them move beyond their challenges and discover, in rejuvenated fashion, what awaits beyond.

Existence is resistance at this point. I see my role these days is as a support and guide to help others heal, despite the times we're in. I recognize that life right now can feel like a dumpster fire, AND that it's still important to take care of each other and ourselves.

Throughout our lives we experience struggles along the way. Over time, we can unknowingly, avoid issues and/or past trauma experiences. When these issues emerge to the surface, it can be extremely overwhelming and negatively impact our relationships and daily functioning. Just like we need teachers for learning how to read & write, we also sometimes need someone to come alongside us to show us how to process, cope, and engage in healthy relationships.

My ideal client is someone who’s been strong for everyone else and now needs space to focus on themselves. They may feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or lost in a life transition. They’re looking for clarity, tools that work, and a therapist who gets it—no judgment, no fluff. Their goal is to feel more in control, more confident, and more at peace. They want real change, not just coping. Together, we work to unpack the tough stuff with honesty, compassion, and a touch of humor when it helps.

I have 30 years of experience as a therapist working with people on issues such as relationship problems, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and substance abuse. I help them to learn how to better control their emotions and handle stress. I find it gratifying to collaborate on visualizing what healing will look like. If desired, I will work in the context of a Christian perspective. As a musician I can suggest creative ways (art, writing, nature) to aid in healing. My education: Univ. of Texas (MSSW), Univ. of Maine and Berklee School of Music.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
