trauma

Reaching out for help is difficult, but giving yourself the opportunity for emotional healing is an incredible gift to offer yourself and your loved ones. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and anger can surface from a multitude of stressors: relationships, work, parenting, or a difficult past resurfacing in your present life. I work with people to help create meaning out of difficulty and embrace a healthier life. Through identifying and coming to grips with fears, we are better able to know ourselves so we can connect in healthy ways in existing relationships, as well as build valuable new ones.

I began my career working with children who suffered from extreme forms of
PTSD
and
trauma
.
For me personally, I find that any client is an ideal client. Every individual has within them their own internal timeline, mechanism, and capacity for change that is inherently correct for them. I do my best to respect this as a clinician. I do ask for an honest accounting of oneself to the best of their ability. If this is successfully reached, then the possibility for healing and moving forward from mental anguish is possible. It is my professional belief that when both the client and the therapist are fully open to the process that the work truly begins.

Are you struggling with unhealthy patterns and feelings of incongruence? Are you having a difficult time understanding your thoughts, feelings, or behaviors? Do you feel unheard? I believe in the power of vulnerability and sharing with an unbiased party, which is where therapy starts. If you're troubled, I'll provide you with a space for unconditional support. If you're too comfortable, I'll create a space for gentle challenging. What I can’t promise is a quick fix. Biologically I believe we are not hard wired for change, and healing takes time. I treat adult clients for addiction, anxiety, depression, and
trauma
issues.
Hi. How are you coping? Life keeps changing so drastically. It doesn't seem real. So many existential questions come to mind, for instance: how will I stay safe?; who's in charge?; what does the future hold? It makes sense that we feel sad, worried or even out of control. This is normal under the circumstances. What gives you joy and peace? What about: sticking to the facts; not panicking; limiting the news; laughter; hobbies; spirituality; loving family, friends and pets to the fullest? Talking to a counselor can also help. I'm available for in-person and virtual sessions. Virtual is convenient, safe and insurance covers it.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
