Therapy can be an intimidating process. How often have you pushed your mental health aside because life grew hectic; were told to “practice self-care” but aren’t sure what that entails; or been told to “just get over something” and you’re left feeling lost or overwhelmed? Being a human is challenging! We’re filled with complicated emotions that derive from our lived experiences, environment, family dynamics, personality, and genetics. My goal is to help you sort some of that out to relieve depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict.

My 30 years of experience include working with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, PTSD, substance abuse, relationship conflicts, self-esteem issues, family , parenting, and divorce, and workplace/school-related issues.
There are times in life when it is difficult to believe that we will ever reach our dreams, hopes, goals, or have the future for which we had hoped. We may be feeling stuck, lonely, and unable to develop or access our wisdom and strengths. Too often, challenging life situations or decisions made in the past tend to have a lasting effect on our lives. I believe that everyone has the capacity to grow, change and heal our relationships with ourselves, our significant others, and those around us.

I am a licensed clinical social worker treating a variety of concerns that bring people into therapy. My areas of focus include parenting, gender and sexuality, intimate relationship growth, and ethical non-monogamy. I believe in acknowledging the intersections of our race, gender, sexuality, education, ability, family history, and social and cultural education. These identities define who we tell ourselves we “should” be. Therapy helps review these facets, determine what works, and practice skills to have effective and realistic ways of relating to the world.

I provide individual and family therapy .
I believe in an individual's desire for self-awareness. I hope to provide a comfortable environment where, as the client, you can explore your choices for the future. When you able to adopt a different view of yourself you gain insight which can make the possibilities endless and the excitement for change contagious. I see individuals who have been working hard and are still struggling to understand why they feel and/or think as they do. I also work with parents who want to do their best for their child(ren) while developing deeper relationships with themselves.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
