My adult and adolescent clients make rapid progress and love working with me because I use a combination of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), warmth, and humor. I focus on solutions, not just problems, and am very successful at helping clients with anxiety and depression. Since I'm also a school counselor, I am highly skilled with young adults that have academic, executive functioning, and social/relationship issues. I check in frequently with all my clients to make sure I am meeting their needs and expectations. After all, therapy is an important investment. I want people to get their money's worth!

Additionally, much of my work has been with those experiencing anxiety, grief, depression, and neurodivergence (Autism & ADHD).
Thank you for considering me to be a part of your mental health journey. I believe in a holistic approach, and that a variety of interventions are required to assist clients in illuminating who they want to be. My approach is interactive, non-pathologizing, and client-centered. I believe that clients have developed skills through their life that have helped them get this far, and sometimes we need an extra eye to help us see our own skills, strengths, and patterns. I started my work in Ohio in 2017, and through moves to NC and DC, I have developed a very integrative model through the therapists I've had the pleasure of working with.

I also work with people who feel anxious or who have experienced trauma in their lives, or who have difficulty in their relationships and are trying to figure out why.
Therapy works best when there is a safe and supportive therapy relationship, where you can explore the issues that brought you into therapy in a nonjudgmental environment. I also know that many people come to therapy to make some changes. For this reason, I combine traditional talk therapy with skills-based methods that teach you specific ways to address your concerns. I will work with you to meet your goals while also helping you to understand yourself better, and to understand the patterns that might sometimes get you stuck.

If you have been struggling with a health concern such as pain, insomnia, or GI distress, you may feel demoralized by the limitations of medical treatments for many health issues. You may not know that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a number of medical conditions. As a clinical health psychologist, I specialize in chronic illness, chronic pain, disorders of brain-gut interaction (DGBIs), health anxiety, insomnia, and stress related to navigating the health care system. Therapy can help you to quiet the brain’s natural threat response to symptoms, foster resilience, and embrace life once again.

Life can be daunting. I help stressed out adults overcome anxiety, self-doubt and sleepless nights to find their footing and begin to create the lives they want. Are you your own worst critic? Maybe you can’t shake the feeling that your best is never good enough? Do the little things feel overwhelming? Is it hard for you to stick up for yourself and you’re left swallowing your anger or disappointment? My name is Liz Caritj and I work with people in high stress situations, particularly people working in the field of law or in rigorous academic programs, who feel like they’re falling apart trying to hold everything together perfectly.

I have over 14 years of experience providing therapy to adults and adolescents to treat anxiety, depression, trauma, anger-management, and substance abuse, among other concerns.
Life transitions and stressors, anxiety, depression, and trauma can often get in the way of feeling like yourself and doing what is best for you. These barriers can mean losing interest in activities you once enjoyed, regularly feeling burned out or on edge, feeling disconnected from your friends and family, or simply not feeling like yourself. With my confidential, professional, and supportive care, we can understand and treat your mood-related symptoms.

Anxiety, depression or panic attacks signal the need for mental health services; analytic methods get at the underlying issues to resolve the symptoms.
My work begins with taking the time to understand each, unique individual. This collaborative, compassionate yet thought provoking process is called "the talking cure," and it can be life changing. I am a curious listener, and through our weekly conversations you will learn to reflect on what you are experiencing differently - this is why psychotherapy works. I am always sure to provide a safe and respectful environment in order to change maladaptive patterns of thinking, behaving or feeling that stem from past experiences and underlie presenting symptoms, while working on practical solutions to immediate problems.

I also incorporate mindfulness meditation techniques in my work as more recent research has indicated the efficacy of these techniques in treating anxiety, depression, and other difficulties.
I have 25+ years of experience in treating anxiety disorders (such as OCD, panic disorder, and phobias), depression, and difficulties related to psychological trauma. For the past 13 years, I have also been treating eating disorders and trichotillomania. I work primarily from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. This involves my client and me working as a collaborative team to determine what skills it would be useful for my client to learn and practice. This process tends to reduce distress and facilitates achieving a greater sense satisfaction, happiness, and meaning in life.

I believe the most important thing about therapy is empowering you so that you can make conscious choices about your life. My style is active and involved. Working collaboratively, I can help you define your goals and see what is causing your pain, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and problems in relationships. As a child, you learned ways of coping with your environment that were safe for you at the time. Those coping behaviors became habitual but, as an adult, no longer work for you and interfere with your happiness and your ability to function at your highest level.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
