Mark believes that individuals are uniquely gifted with a purpose to seek self-actualization and contentment to optimize intrapersonal wellness. He attributes the complexities of humanity to have enabled him to implement or utilize an eclectic approach to counseling. A therapeutic process is a safe place for individuals to learn more about themselves, mental health awareness, and spiritual connection. As noted within the inner-person, counseling requires a commitment to address cognitive and emotional deficits to seek wellness to promote a healthy balanced lifestyle.
Seeking therapy can be a frightening experience and finding the right therapist is extremely important. I belief in the value of a strong therapeutic alliance for the success of therapy and prioritize creating a trusting, safe, and nonjudgmental environment for clients to feel comfortable opening up and work through whatever is bringing them into therapy. Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW-C, LICSW, MSW, MEd
I like to help others heal from suffering - whether it be understanding and managing emotions, processing trauma, reducing negative thinking patterns, getting unstuck, changing habits, letting go, achieving personal goals, communicating or relating better, building coping skills and resilience, etc. I take a holistic approach in my work and integrate talk therapy, mind-body skills (breathing, relaxation, yoga nidra, qigong, etc.), and healthy food/sleep/movement practices. My therapy style is warm, thoughtful, attuned, open, strengths-based, collaborative.
I specialize in working with families, couples, groups, and individuals. I treat children as young as three, have experience with school phobia, adoption, blended families, gender issues, gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals, and the challenges of elderly. I am experienced working with psychoses, severe post traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, and problems of every day life. I have special expertise working with the LGBTQ+ population, with adolescents, sexual development, severe mental illness, post traumatic stress disorder, and physical illnesses.
Our lives are filled with loss: relationships, jobs, physical abilities; deaths of loved ones; our own mortality. These losses shape our sense of who we are and our assumptions about life. However, these losses can give us the chance to make meaning, not by “moving on” or “finding closure,” but by walking and working through darker times. My job is not to help you “feel better,” but to join you on your journey. I won’t bring timelines or stages or expectations. I will bring my training and lived experience and hope to work with you as a fellow traveler on this shared journey to make meaning of our losses.
You have decided that something in your life needs to change: perhaps chronic stress or emotional pain, confusing behaviors or needs in your child, or your way of dealing with ongoing family issues. Therapy is a collaborative process in which I facilitate these changes. I have significant experience with issues around giftedness and its social-emotional challenges, anxiety, trauma, attachment, and adoption. I treat all clients with respect, interest, and openness. I am a relaxed, approachable person who feels privileged to work at a job I love with children and adults who teach and inspire me with their courage.
Do you feel you are not fulfilling your potential in life and love? Are there things you want to change about yourself, your situation, your partner?
I use a multidimensional understanding of a person to quickly identify core issues. All people have strengths and gifts of which they are often unaware. Together we can uncover these strengths, develop new capacities and chart a course for the future.
I'm an interactive, engaged therapist. I use a variety of techniques from cognitive, somatic and depth psychology, to promote self-awareness and emotional growth.
I work with adults with trauma related disorders including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Dissociative Disorders including Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). My therapeutic approach involves Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and/or Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), though I may use other theories or approaches depending on the needs of the client and the therapeutic process. I am also trained in Prolonged Exposure therapy for the treatment of PTSD.
When something in your past has an effect on your perceptions of your present situations and creates stress in your life you can benefit by talking about and working through your experiences which leads to understanding your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. If you are struggling with issues that prevent you from being as happy as you would like, I can help. For over 35 years, I have specialized in working with children and adolescents, as well as adults and couples. I utilize play therapy with young children and look to their parents as partners in treatment. With older children and adolescents, I use various approaches depending on their emotional development and issues. For those of us a bit older, life transitions including college, marriage, becoming a parent and loss can be stressful, but also create opportunities for growth.
I am a clinical psychologist with 30 years experience working with adolescents, adults, and couples. I provide brief consultation to help you clarify the challenges you are facing, weigh options, and overcome inertia; individual psychotherapy when you are dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, or stress; and couples counseling to help you communicate effectively, solve problems jointly, and strengthen your relationship. I also work with individuals and couples whose careers may take them abroad and away from their families for extended periods and can make video conferencing services available in lieu of office-based appointments for established clients who are traveling.
It's hard to know how to choose a counselor. I'm happy to meet for an hour or two at no charge to make sure it is a good match. Be aware that I accept Maryland and Federal Workers' Compensation. It starts with feeling at ease with someone, and feeling understood. I'm willing to be helpful for people who struggle with addiction, but I may need people to see an additional counselor for more focused help on this. One's thinking and beliefs are important, and certainly there is an emotional component. I find that people feel a lot better when they feel their lives are moving forward.
