Many challenges in life can feel like they are uniquely yours to bear alone; however, this is rarely the case. People visit me concerned about how they feel and function in key life and professional relationships. I have worked with individuals, couples, and families on a variety of overlapping issues such as anxiety and depression, self-esteem, parenting children with special needs, setting limits with adult children, work/life balance issues, and sexual desire issues in committed relationships. Often these issues can be helped by addressing the common denominator of individual development within a family or relationship system.

Hello! After working 30+ years as a business leader with a highly successful career history of leading business and personal transformation, coaching, mentoring and training, I responded to the “call” from the Holy Spirit and pursued my passion of helping others with life's struggles and began to exercise my spiritual gifts of exhortation and mercy. My foundational scripture which anchors me is Proverbs 11:14 which says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."

I work with young people coping with depression, anxiety, trauma, and
self esteem
issues.
Hello and welcome! My name is Andrea Boyd, (she/her) LCSW-C, and I am a psychotherapist specializing in working with young adults, roughly ages 18-26. This is a complex and exciting time of life in which we make myriad choices about who we want to be, who we want around us, what we want to do, and what we value, all while navigating a culture that often puts impossible expectations on us. The amount of pressure to perform or to be a certain way in these years can be overwhelming, especially for anyone with a different or marginalized identity.

I think we can all agree that feeling stuck and directionless in life is a pretty miserable feeling. It can also be deceiving. You might have everything “all together” on the outside, but the reality is you haven’t felt that spark in life for some time now. If you were being completely honest, how long do you think it’s been since you truly took care of your needs? If it’s been a while, you might have been putting the needs of others before your own, which means you could be in burnout territory. You deserve to feel excited about your life! You deserve to feel better than just "meh."

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
