As you’re looking for a therapist, it’s important to find someone you feel comfortable opening up to, and maybe even sharing aspects of your life that are hard to discuss. My clients often go there with me quickly; they can tell that I will be warm, supportive, nonjudgmental, and honor their trust. My approach to therapy is multicultural, LGBTQ+ affirming, sex positive, and I have a background working with first generation people. Clients who want to better understand and express their emotions have found therapy with me helpful for learning communication and skills they weren’t taught growing up.

Clients, just like other hu mans are really unique.
I approach most counseling issues from a perspective that most people are doing the best they can with what they believe and perceive. Hence, the context for most of our pain as hu man beings and our well being is found within the meanings we code our experiences with and the relationship spheres we foster. Therefore, above all the various strategies I may find the need to employ on behalf of my client, the most impactful of all of these is that of using the compassionate connection we build with each other as being a powerful catalyst to generate the flow of new possibility.

Mark believes that individuals are uniquely gifted with a purpose to seek self-actualization and contentment to optimize intrapersonal wellness. He attributes the complexities of hu manity to have enabled him to implement or utilize an eclectic approach to counseling. A therapeutic process is a safe place for individuals to learn more about themselves, mental health awareness, and spiritual connection. As noted within the inner-person, counseling requires a commitment to address cognitive and emotional deficits to seek wellness to promote a healthy balanced lifestyle.

I believe our most troubling attitudes and behavior are meant to protect us from real emotional threats or to help us achieve certain experiences that are vital to our growth. I help clients understand their experiences in the world in terms of these important functions. In dialogue with me clients come to recognize how their most important relationships have shaped the way they think, feel, and act in both desirable and undesirable ways. I strive to help clients discern their authentic needs, desires, and values so they can assert them with conviction in their daily lives.

I CAN HELP YOU HEAL YOUR RELATIONSHIP. PREMARITAL AND COUPLES COUNSELING. "Why does my partner overreact?" "Why do I get so triggered?" "How come the punishment doesn't fit the crime?" “Why can’t he be more supportive?” “Is anything I do ever enough for her?” While you are feeling hurt, you have an added layer of confusion. You simultaneously love your partner and even hope to stay in this relationship to keep your love, family, and dreams intact. You are torn in a tug-of-war of emotions and desire to feel understood, accepted, and embraced by your partner.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
