couples
I focus on the story of their emotional connection, how it formed, how it developed, what things are now creating difficulties.
Our lives are filled with loss: relationships, jobs, physical abilities; deaths of loved ones; our own mortality. These losses shape our sense of who we are and our assumptions about life. However, these losses can give us the chance to make meaning, not by “moving on” or “finding closure,” but by walking and working through darker times. My job is not to help you “feel better,” but to join you on your journey. I won’t bring timelines or stages or expectations. I will bring my training and lived experience and hope to work with you as a fellow traveler on this shared journey to make meaning of our losses.

If you are struggling with issues that prevent you from being as happy as you would like, I can help. For over 35 years, I have specialized in working with children and adolescents, as well as adults and
couples
. I utilize play therapy with young children and look to their parents as partners in treatment. With older children and adolescents, I use various approaches depending on their emotional development and issues. For those of us a bit older, life transitions including college, marriage, becoming a parent and loss can be stressful, but also create opportunities for growth.

How do you go from feeling overwhelmed and lost to clarity and a solid sense of self? Contemplating this journey informs my work as a psychotherapist. In my experience, the single most important factor that leads to significant change is the development of a trusting client-therapist
relationship
. This allows trust in new possibilities, and seeing yourself differently and considering this new sense of self. I liken therapy to reorganizing heavy furniture in a room and in some cases getting rid of pieces. The furniture represents the client's view of self. With acceptance and empathic curiosity, change can begin.

I enjoy working with individuals,
couples
, and families. When thinking about the stages of change, I prefer to meet clients where they are; and am willing to work at a pace they feel comfortable with at the start of treatment. Individuals come to treatment with a myriad of goals and needs. Specific issues may be difficult to pinpoint. However, one of my goals in the overall process is to see clients who are open to changing their current dynamic or patterns, with the hope of a more favorable outcome.

**Flexible evening and weekend appointments available.** Therapy should have lasting impact and help you to create meaningful change in your life, for the long-term. I approach care with humor, compassion, and an open-mind. Change is hard, developing insight can be painful, and avoidance seems like a better idea on paper than it typically is. As a therapist I value your needs, your pace, and your goals. We can get there.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
