Making changes in your life can be a difficult and, sometimes frightening, task. You have already taken one of the hardest steps, which is acknowledging that you need help. My clients have included pre-teens, adolescents, young adults and adults. I have worked with people who come into therapy for many different reasons, including the experience of trauma,
anxiety
, depression, treatment resistant depression, and bipolar disorder. Developmental struggles including adolescent stressors related to academia and achievement, and young adults struggling to achieve independence, are areas of particular interest to me.

You’ve had issues with
anxiety
or depression for as long as you can remember. You’ve worked so hard at overcoming your issues in the past and you fear that if you let yourself fully feel your sadness and
anxiety
, you won't be able to recover. Your family has told you that you are too dramatic, and this has caused you to not want to share your negative feelings with others. You worry that they may grow tired of your negativity. You need an outlet to talk through your feelings, but you can’t bring yourself to go to yourself to your friends and family again. Things could be worse, but you know life could also be so much better!

Traumatic and stressful life experiences have made it challenging for you to live life the way that you want. You find yourself struggling with thoughts such as, " I'm not good enough", "I'm a failure", or the feeling "something is wrong with me". You have struggled with
anxiety
or depression for as long as you can remember. Living this way is exhausting, and you want something different. Traditional talk therapy can be helpful, but sometimes it's not enough. Brain- and body-based therapies, such as Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be helpful.

Yogi Berra was on to something when he said "“Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical." The only thing is, baseball is not the only sport that is impacted by the mental side of the game. In fact the mental component is important in anything related to performance; sports, public speaking, music, emergency-work, military, etc. As a mental performance coach, I help client's with topics including, but not limited to: confidence,
anxiety
, injury and return to play, stress management, communication, recruiting, relationship dynamics, relaxation, focus, and performing under pressure.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
